Gower for me. Inconsistent, but a lovely batsman to watch. Cairns was an excellent ODI player, but never all that effective in test cricket on a consistent basis.

Cairns gets my vote. Never saw much of Gower, but Cairns' consistent all-round excellence over a long period, in a team that has been fairly poor at times, gets the vote for me.

Gower here. Frustratingly inconsistent at times, but glorious to watch when in full flow. Cairns was (and is) a very effective ODI player, but his awful trot with injuries meant he was never quite the test player he might have been.

Would STILL cross the road to watch Gower - simply wonderful to watch, batting and fielding of the highest order.

Whatever it takes!!!
Cairns for me... I never saw much of Gower except from clips of old matches... But Cairns is a real match winner, perhaps the only one New Zealand have had for over a decade.. And if it weren't for his physical problems, I think he would have been the best all rounder in the world for quite a while.

Like a lot of people here I have seen more of Cairns than of Gower. But the clips I have seen of Gower have been very impressive. I also just checked his nice stats on cricinfo.....

Batting and fielding averages
class mat inns no runs hs ave sr 100 50 4s 6s ct st
Tests 117 204 18 8231 215 44.25 50.59 18 39 979 10 74 0
ODIs 114 111 8 3170 158 30.77 75.15 7 12 290 22 44 0

so Gower for me.
