I did wonder what happened to Scott Walter. Absolutely gunned it in the shield a few years back then dropped off the face of the earth.
TBF averaging 30 isn't quite gunning it.

But yes, if he's dominating Grade cricket to that extent he really should've had another chance. Record is still pretty damn good for a 22 year old (when he played his most recent FC match)

Bert leading from the front as skipper this morning. Currently 53* from 41 as Metro look to easily chase down a hapless CA XI total.

And bats down the order in the second game, makes 1* off one, and they lose easily.

Ffs nsw selectors, get your **** together

I’ve been following Pfeffer and Gode pretty closely because they dominated the Brisbane Grade Comp and then were very ordinary when they go their chance (admittedly Gode didn’t get much of a chance at all).

Yeah it's fine if blokes get a shot (be it long enough or not is another question) and don't make the most of it. When they literally play every other cricketer in first grade off the park and get overlooked for a foetus then it tends to get a little bit ****ing annoying tstl.

I think it is fundamentally different for fast bowlers than it is for batsman, no point picking some limited medium pacer just because they are taking grade wickets, would much rather see someone younger and faster get an opportunity.

With batting however selecting on "potential" is dumb, actual runs and lots of them should be what is required

It also depends who you have in your ranks, doesn't it? Currently there's no lack of depth in fast bowling in Australia. The quality of that depth is yet to be determined in a lot of cases, but there are plenty of blokes around. Lack of runs is a thing across Shield and international cricket for us though. It isn't 2004 any more, where you can bring a project player like Clarke was then into a test line up behind Hayden, Langer, Ponting and Martyn. Same goes at State level, where blokes are getting picked on the players they hope they will become instead of the players they are. Also doesn't help that if you're in a "pathways" program, you get first crack because they've invested so much time and money into you.

If you are a cut above skillswise of course you can succeed without a great deal of pace. But a lot of these guys simply aren't of that calibre, for every Sayers there is about 3 or 4 Nick Bentons knocking around who clearly can't cut it

And early Anderson wasn't slow, he was ****e though

That's the thing though, Walter's record wasn't even that bad. Definitely deserved another chance.

Was more a general example, wasn't really thinking of Walter. Haven't seen him in ages so I have no idea how well he is bowling these days but from what I remember he looked better than current day Feldman at least
