If you thought Inzamam was out of shape, wait till you see this bloke. As vice-captain during the 1999 World Cup, Akram Khan played Obelix to Aminul Islam's Asterix, twirling a menhir-sized bat for 42 in the controversial win over Pakistan. His technique is hardly worthy of the name - in fact, Akram possesses the widest gate in international cricket - but he's no mug when it comes to straight-lofting the spinners. Very much a specialist slip.
:laugh::laugh:
That's the meanest profile I've ever seen

A general challenge to anyone interested - make an XI comprised entirely of players (with international experience) who have not scored a Test century or taken a five-wicket haul, the goal obviously to be to come up with the best XI within those limitations. Could do the same for ODIs as well, would be a bit easier. I'll give it a go when I've got some time tomorrow if no-one attempts it. :)

Here is a pretty decent one :

1. Chetan Chauhan (India)
- 2084 test runs at 31.6
- 16 test fifties !
- Partner in India's best opening with Gavaskar (59 innings)
- Scored OVER 3000 runs with Gavaskar at a partnership average of 51.22
- The runs they scored together put them as the 7th most successful opening pair in history.
- Has the sad record of the most runs and most fifties than any player in the history of the game without getting a hundred !!

2. Bruce Laird (Australia)
- Missed a century on debut by 8 runs against the mighty Windies attack of Roberts, Holding, Garner and Croft at Brisbane in 1979.
- Scored another 75 in the second innings of the same game to show it was no flash in the pan !!
- Played another 20 tests, scored 11 fifites in all, scored 1341 runs at over 35 per innings and yet never got a hundred !

3. Aaron Bacher (South Africa)
- 6 50's in 12 tests
- Batting average of 31.3
-

4. Horace Cameron (South Africa)
- 12 fifties
- 1239 test runs at 30.2

5. Barrie Shephard (Australia)
- 5 fifties in 9 tests,
- a batting average of 41.8
- 71 no on debut against Trueman Statham and Titmus
- a top score of 96 against South Africa

6. Alan Fairfax (Australia)
- Superb All Rounder
- Right hand middle order batsman, played 10 tests
- Batting average : 51.3 !! with 4 fifties.
- Right arm Fast Medium Bowler. Opened bowling for Australia
- Bowling average 31.25
- Best bowling 4 - 31 vs. Windies at Melbourne 1931 which included both openes
- Another 4 in an innings haul at Lords included the greats, Hobbs, Woolley, Hendren, Gubby Allen !!

7. Derryck Murray (Windies)
- Number 1 keeper for Windies in the 60's and 70's.
- Played 62 tests
- Nearly 2000 test runs at 22.9 runs an innings.
- 11 fifties mostly in crucial situations.
- 189 vitims including five in an innings at at Bourda in 1977 vs Pakistan

8. Winston Benjamin (Windies)
- Genuine fast bowler.
- 61 wkts at 27.0
- decent bat with 2 fifties and a top test score of 85 vs Newzealand and a 51 in his last test against an attack that included Paul Reiffell, Young MacGrath, Brendon Julien, young Warne

9. Dayle Hadlee (Newzealand)
- Right Arm Fast Medium
- 71 wickets at 33.6 each
- Decent bat with one test fifty.

10. Jupp Valence (England)
- Right Arm Off Spinner
- 28 wickets in 8 tests at 22 runs each.

11. Michael Hendrick (England)
- Right arm fast medium
- 87 test wickets at 25.8 runs each
Superb figures by any standards.
-Except for Melbourne 1974 when he was injured before he could complete the third over in Australia's first innings not to take any further part in the game,
he never ever failed to take a wicket in a test match of the 30 he played in !!

For ODI's (Players without a 100 or a 5 for)

1. Tom Moody
2. Ian Botham
3. Kim Hughes
4. Graham Thorpe
5. Ian Chappell
6.Jeremy Coney
7.Roger Harper
8. Moin Khan
9. Malcolm Marshal
10. Paul Reiffell
11. Sarfaraz Nawaz

Not a bad side for those that didnt do it.

Not surprisingly, it is difficult to find Indian ad Pakistani batsmen who are good but didnt score a hundred. You know why, because batting up the order, scoring a hundred and boosting one's hundred is all that matters to these guys :p

Young Newzealanders seem unaware of a great all rounder from their country, John Reid. Very good right arm leg spinner, rare for NZL, and one of the most aggressive batsmen to come from NZL or anywhere else for that matter. Fine captain too. But I suppose its a long time ago.

Why do you want to Bond to bowl the first ball rather than one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time and without doubt the greatest cricketere ever from New Zealand, because you think Bond is quicker ?

If yes, let me tell you , there was a time when Hadlee was THE FASTEST bowler in the world (or as close to it as not to matter) and only later in his career he bowled just a bit slower but with great control and perhaps the finest exhibition of both way movement of the ball the world has ever seen since Sid Barnes and that is a HUGE compliment.

No my dear, you do a GREAT dishonour not to ask Sir Richard which end he would take with the cherry.

I would have thought that Martin Crowe was a better skipper than Fleming but I assume you know more about Kiwi cricket than I do.

My all-time NZ test team....

Glenn Turner
John Wright
Andrew Jones
Martin Crowe
Stephen Fleming (c)
Chris Cairns
Richard Hadlee
Ian Smith (w.k)
Daniel Vettori
Shane Bond
Jack Cowie

12th Man. J R Reid

In an extended 15 man squad i'd add ...... Bert Sutcliffe, Dion Nash and Martin Donnelly.

Some could argue Flemings record is not as good as other contenders but I believe his selection would be warranted for his captaincy and standing at 2nd slip to Hadlee

Would be a very handy side.

You have obviously put a lot of time and effort into this and done a very good job indeed, but I cannot resist being pedantic enough to point out that your number 10 batsman is actually Valence Jupp rather than Jupp Valance.

England XI

Worst England Test XI (Test XI, debut post 1995, for me, but you can pick anyone)

Darren Maddy
Aftab Habib
Usman Afzaal
Rikki Clarke*
Anthony McGrath
Ronnie Irani
Mark Ealham
James Foster+
Gavin Hamilton
Richard Dawson
Ed Giddins

Clarke at 4, Giddins spearheading the bowling "attack" :D

I would put Schofield in that XI, as the spinner instead of Dawson. At least Dawson took some wickets.
