Genuine question for discussion: why do people rate Hayden as one of the best two openers Aust have produced?

I always felt he was suspect against true quality pace (which is obviously true to some extent of every opener), but in a mythical atg situation where he’s facing Marshall/Ambrose/Holding or Wasim/Waqar/Imran or Steyn/Donald/Rabada/Procter, my gut is that Bill Lawry would be a far better option.

Happy to be corrected, but always got the feeling that he cashed in a lot, which he’s entitled to do, but having watched all his career, and his partnership with Langer, I’d say Langer seemed better against quality pace.

Think it's basically his ability to take over a game, or just jump start the lineup.

And he was the higher rated opener of the two.

Hayden set the tone of dominance for the team right from the beginning of the innings, and often right from the beginning of the match as Australia like to bat first when they won the toss. It's something that the rest of the team didn't let up, but he was the first piece, and an intimidating ass mountain of a piece he was. I think he's an easy choice for a modern opening pair.
