All-rounder XI vs Specialist XI

Just a fun exercise. Selecting one XI with all all-rounders, giving them incredible batting depth and bowling options. The other XI with pure specialists and therefore better in pure skill. No Bradman though.

All-rounders need to have a batting average of minimum 20 and at least 50 wickets.

As keepers, Gilchrist goes with all-rounder XI and Knott in the specialist XI.

Nice selections. The key advantages for the specialists is the quality of openers and spinner. Whether that would be enough to handle the depth of the all-rounders is another question.

Knott averaged 33 with the bat and made 30 test 50s and 5 100s.

The keeper in the specialist XI should be a gun keeper who was a very ordinary bat. Someone who never made 100

Fair enough. I was willing to allow some leeway on the keeper role.

Hammond, Kallis and Sobers is still a very tough middle order and then you have batting all the way until the end. In those situations, the presence of a good fifth bowler may be key.

Notable keepers who make this criteria include Wasim Bari, Wally Grout, Bob Taylor, Niroshan Dickwella, Bert Oldfield, Don Tallon and of course, Tim Paine.

Gonna take a moment to appreciate Oldfield btw, idc how many spinners you play with, 52 stumpings in 54 matches is ****ing insane, 85 year old record now.

It's interesting, I guess even back then batsman must have loved dancing down the wicket to spinners. For some reason I thought that might have been a more modern way of playing them

Would the spinner actually aim for a stumping or for the batsmen to play loosely?
