Cricketer Of The Year
"I maintain that one of the greatest, possibly 'the greatest', piece of sustained fast bowling it has ever been my privilege to witness was by Michael Holding in the 1976 Test at The Oval. To appreciate the full significance of that performance it first necessary to realise that it was achieved on an absolute featherbed... It is fascinating and revealing to examine the figures of other fast and medium fast bowlers in that match."

This comes from one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time and someone in the top ten.
Woakes?

My father as I said is a big Lillee fan but he rates Holding #2 and was surprised he wasn't in the discussion here. He thinks he was a bit better than Marshall and easily better than McGrath.
I asked him to come up with an all time XI and he sent me this:

1 Hobbs
2 B Richards
3 Bradman
4 V Richards
5 Kallis
6 Sobers
7 Gilchrist
8 Imran
9 Warne
10 Lillee
11 Holding

He said if Barry Richards isn't allowed he wants Boycott (!!) instead.

Ask him where he rates Gooch.

Strangely enough, Warne makes ATG XIs much more consistently than any of Sachin, Marshall or Hobbs. IIRC, he was the only cricketer bar Don and Sobers to get all 60 points in Cricinfo's team. Sachin for comparison was the next best and got 51. Hobbs beat Gavaskar by a single point.
Yes he does, which is what I pointed out consistently.

He really is easily the 3rd most selected player behind the big two, and has a good a claim as any to be the 3rd greatest player ever.

He really does make practically every team though.

@Prince EWS
Your dad must have seen both Hutton & Sunny so surprised he wanted Boycott. Did he pick Kallis over Sachin or Lara because of his bowling?
He didn't see Hutton, he was born in 59.

He rates Kallis's batting ahead of Lara but equal to Sachin, so picked him for bowling/catching. He's a bit like kyear with the catching thing, he mentioned Bob Simpson when he was talking about the second opener. 😅

I've seen enough, PapaEWS is amazing.

His Australian team is less controversial other than Doug Walters and that's just bias because he was his favourite player.

Trumper
Simpson
Bradman
Border
Miller
Walters
Gilchrist
Davidson
Warne
Lillee
McGrath

He did kind of want to pick Thommo over McGrath but knew he couldn't justify it.

I'd ask my father to do a England all time XI but he'd probably not react very positively to me bothering him at 5AM

Yeah...... I don't rate my players on their likeliness to make AT XIs, so Warne being in Top 3 overall isn't very likely personally.

Lockness of a player should be based on one's own judgement, not cricinfo teams imo.
Those are two entirely different premises though.

There are about 7 players that are an absolute lock for my team.

That's totally different from which players you can pencil into any credible AT XI exercise.

And here (CW) is totally different to that of former players, journalists, historians and pundits.
Case in point, Warne and Richards. Outside of this community, Warne is an absolute certainty, and Richards isn't that far behind, even if less of done deal.
Here they are both tossups.

The ones that among the experts and former players that can be pencilled (or even penned) in are

Hobbs | Bradman | Tendulkar | Sobers | Marshall | Warne

We've seen enough of them to acknowledge that's what it is.

The ones that can be etched in stone for CW are

Hobbs | Bradman | Tendulkar | Sobers | Gilchrist | Marshall

If one were interested in amalgamating those two, most of the names do tend to appear on both. Isn't it fair then to say that those 5 are pretty much locks everywhere?
