A different way of ranking batsmen... ODI edition (averages, strike rates, WC performances and more)

So, this one was a little trickier to balance. We've got the debate on how important world cups are, the strike rate/average balance and again the arguments of longevity vs consistency (aggerate vs average). Not to mention RPI vs average.... which I half tackled.

I decided to with 6 categories, 2 related to world cups. That's giving it a decent weighting I feel while not neglecting career performance too much

Career average (60 innings minimum)
Career runs
Career strike-rate (60 innings minimum)
Career 50+ score ratio (60 innings minimum)
WC average (10 innings and 2 WCs minimum)
WC runs

I decide to give each category equal weighting this time... meaning that I just took the top 40 from each category and awarded points accordingly. IE for career averages, Kohli gets 40 points, Babar 39, Bevan 38 and for career runs Sachin gets 40, Sanga 39, Ponting 38 etc. I feel the increased amount of total points floating around makes for a more interesting analysis.

Two average and runs categories gives them an extra weighting/importance over the strike-rate category in a sense which I think is fair. I also didn't want to give the WC too many categories so opted against WC strike rates. And the 50+ ratio category replaces the 100s ratio category from the test edition and because its a ratio it means there are 3 'quality' categories compared to just 2 'quantity' ones(ignoring S/R), which I feel is close to fair. 50+ ratio is also loosely related to Runs per innings, which I think may have some merit but I could not be assed calculating.

I could have added WC 50+ score ratio as well but then we're getting to pretty small sample sizes and again, didn't want the WCs meaning too much.

Anyway if anyone is still following along, I will only be posting the 50+ score ratio list and the overall points. The 5 other categories rankings are easily available online and I don't want to make this post as bloated as the test one.

so, some thoughts. I won't discuss the 50+ ratio stuff in much detail as it's all there to see.

ABDV cleans up and wins comfortably because not only did he pick up plenty of points through having a top tier average and getting plenty of career runs, he also outperformed Kohli at WCs and got a lot of points for his S/R

Kohli did okay with his S/R too, but didn't crack the top 40 for WC averages which hurt him. And as he probably still has a WC left to play, WC career runs was a category where he was also missed out on max value. Sachin only fell down on S/R and career averages, he smashed the longevity records and his WC average was great too.

Rohit's last WC really helped him climb the ladder, Warner went low-key very well, Viv did great considering the era he played and still cracked the S/R list despite retiring in 1991. A lack of matches meant he struggled to make max impact in the aggerate sections though.

Kallis, Sanga and Dravid all were helped by playing for so long and doing decently in the WCs, Dravid's WC average especially is top-tier. Only one category dedicated to Strike rate meant they were not hurt much by being such slow batters.

Du-Plessis, Babar, KW, Bairstow and Root are all playing in this current era where it seems a high strike rate plus high average is pretty achievable for any really good ODI batsman, so they make it through.

Gilchrist and Jaysuriya are nowhere near the career averages top 40, but good strike rates, long careers and impressive WC records help them make the top 20

Whatever it takes!!!
In ODI cricket especially, batting averages and strike rates have to be normalized for eras. Same with bowling averages, strike rates and Economy rates. The game has been messed with so much, we can and probably should, have seperate categories for the types of ODI rules that were in existence at various points.

Sanagakkara featuring at 8 in ODIs!?!? This is obviously broken.

EDIT: He's down at 42 in ankitj's list so that looks legit.

If I took out the longevity points which helped Sanga, Kallis arguably overachieve, it would have meant Sachin would have underachieveed. So it was a tricky one

Yeah. I know my system is pretty basic but it was a good bit of fun and easy to do. Adjusting strike rates for eras would have been way beyond my mental ability

A decent 2019 WC would have done wonders for Guppy. His WC average fell from probably in the top 10 to outside the top 40 completely

Can we ever just appreciate a funky new system that is clearly going to have issues without trying to fix every single issue with it and normalise the rankings to match what we expect anyway?

Sorry mate.. i just meant to say I think this system for tests works far better than for ODIs. Not that I don't appreciate the thoughts and efforts you have put into this. Apologies if that comment came across that way.?
