Okay so I just took a look at Pope’s stats and can someone explain to me what’s happening with him in the second innings??? I have obviously been living under a rock to never notice it before.

He looks a jittery, overanxious batsman at the best of times. Not a surprise he melts under pressure in second innings. For a while I used to think of him as Ian Bell's successor but turns out Bell, fragile as he could be, was a model of composure compared to this guy.

Supposedly he’s like Steve Smith in that he gets so fixated that he struggles to sleep over the course of a Test match, although that’s where the similarities to Smith end (he hasn’t been banned from captaining his country for one)

He's not great vs the ball coming back in, isn't amazing vs spin, and a shaky starter. These become exhaserbated in 3th/4th innings when there's more in it for the spinners/pacers get more inconsistent bounce.

He seems to get a lot of good balls, is he unlucky, or is it more that his balance issues make the good balls look unplayable?

Kimber did a video on it recently. Apparently he suffers from the same thing as Smith where he really struggles to sleep during a Test. Smith has a similar second innings drop off.

Pope also has a serious issues with spin, which is more pronounced in the second innings.

I must watch this because I catch a few Kimber vids and articles and he does not rate Pope. I think he is kinder to Crawley!

I would say Michael Vaughan was the one who made his dismissals look like wonder balls because he would constantly play inside balls hitting off stump. Bairstow and Pope get out playing across straight balls and it mostly just looks like it’s their first time ever batting.

What the hell am I going to do with myself now? I have to wait until almost winter?

In other news, when are Australia or England due to tour India again? 2027? Or is someone coming over in 2026?

As a SL supporter we don’t get into strong positions nor are favorites often enough for gambhiring to come into play. I’m sure WI and Bang fans feel similar.
Everyone can gambhir. If you pay attention to the experts, a proper employment of gambhiring begins before a ball is bowled.

Yeah very fair call on the 2019 v 23 Ashes. The 2019 scoreline was largely dependent on an ATG 4th innings performance from Stokes. Otherwise Australia looked much the better side and were well deserving of something like a 3-1 scoreline. In 23 on the other hand, England generally had the upper hand, and it was only that braindead day 1 declaration and the 4th test being rained out that kept the series to a draw
On the other hand, there was a ball.

Definitely that. I have been raging over the last couple of months that he hasn't been taken aside earlier in his career and had serious sessions on trying to sort this out. He doesn't play white ball cricket for England so he has sufficient downtime to try and address this, but he has barely evolved as a player.
