As a" village" umpire who often umpires my own team's batting, rule of the thumb is that you give the plumb decisions (it's only fair) but ones that might be more towards the periphery of the stumps are very much not out!

I haven't been an umpire either apart from indoor cricket where most people get to have a go at umpiring no matter how good or bad they are at it.
