This used to happen occasionally by accident. The bowler accidentally let go of the ball or it would slip out of his hand and end up just going anywhere. Generally the ball would be called dead and re-bowled. But legally the ball was still live and the batsman had the right to hit it from where ever it landed and came to a halt. Generally batsman don't take advantage of that, but there's a few that have over the years.
