2020/21 New Zealand Domestic Season

Listening to the ABC Grandstand podcast yesterday, from this I have learnt that Australia test squad due to leave for South Africa at same time NZ v Aus T20 series starts.

Maybe 18 or more players in an extended covid-reasons test squad. So split squads, could be quite a weak one that come to NZ? Although, tbh, I don't know how much crossover they have anyway. If it was a T20 World Cup you'd expect Warner, Smith, Cummins and Starc from the test team, don't know how many from the extra 8 or 9 test travelling reserves.

Yeah, I think I think there’ll be something wrong if we don’t win 5-0. On the positive side, it might help us banish some mental demons vs Aus (ok, that’s being very hopeful).

That's disappointing... why do they have two tours at the same time? Would rather see a strong Aussie visit our shores. That'll at least show us where we at. This is a no win situation. If you win then it's against a depleted side and if you don't then you can't beat a second xi. Besides I'd rather pay to watch a team that has Smith, Warner, Cummmins, Starc etc than a glorified big bash side.

Surely it doesn't make much difference?

Last time Aus played NZ in a T20 in NZ (a tournament final no less) their team was

Warner
Short
Agar
Maxwell
Finch
Lynn
Stoinis
Carey
Tye
Richardson
Stanlake

Last T20I Australia played

Wade
Finch
Smith
Maxwell
Henriques
Short
Sams
Abbott
Tye
Swepson
Zampa

ok, you had Warner in one game and Smith/Wade in another but is it really that different? The combination of resting players and the relatively small overlap between T20 and test teams these days means an Australian T20 team is invariably a bit of a "BBL All Stars" side.

By the same token I don't see why these games will be easy, as the bulk of Australia's best T20 players will still be available. Also, our own T20 side has a bit of a "Super Smash All Stars" look these days anyway with the likes of Seifert, Phillips, Kuggeleign, Tickner, Sodhi etc etc returning from the wilderness to play their specialist format.

Gee.. I'm so out of touch with the Aussie T20 side looking at the above list of players. Don't now much about Sams, Abbott, Swepson. Can't even remember them playing. Stanlake was a gun bowler last time I saw him in NZ but not sure if he's still in the mix? I haven't watched a single BBL ball bowled let along a game. Too many leagues to follow.

Yeah I don’t watch any big bash matches or t20 internationals apart from ours, so really wouldn’t have a clue tbh haha

Stanlake kinda went off the boil there for a while. He looks a much better bowler when he actually tries to bowl a slightly fuller length imo, but too often he just resorts to banging everything in

Stanlake is sort of a mystery to me. Everyone raves about Kyle Jamieson being 6’8” bowling 138kph and how hard that is to play. Stanlake is 6’9” 148kph, he’s like a taller Jamieson with a more athletic and aggressive run up and action and just...isn’t that effective. It’s baffling to me that the combination of speed and height alone don’t make him inherently more difficult to play than he seems to be.

Yeah sort of right comparison. When I first saw Stanlake I was worried for our boys. He was tall, quick and the bounce was crazy. I thought he's one for the ages and will play all format. Then I barely heard about him after.

It's the control that really makes Jamieson dangerous though. That ability to swing it both ways, when allied with accuracy and the bounce is what does for batsmen. Stanlake seems more scattergun and doesn't swing it as much.

yea theres nowhere to hide from kj with a red ball. genuinely frightening bowler who looks like getting a wicket every over.

stanlake has the raw material to be the goat fast bowler tho. iirc he cant stay on the park for red ball cricket either.

Rugby v Cricket about to get under way on tv1. Kaylum Boshier was the under 19 cricket captain a few seasons ago. Sinclair also Veterans Parore and Marc Ellis are playing this year. Sinclair again playing for team rugby.

It amazes me every year in this game that old retired international cricketers hardly seem to be any better at cricket than old retired rugby players.

Why do 45 year old retired Prems club players smash me to all parts on Saturdays but 45 year old ex-internationals can’t do it?

I guess the old firsts players have kept their hand in and are still playing ... but also wonder if the cricketers in this game are trying to keep it close. Or in some of these player's cases they were never that great also haha.
