1st Test (Leeds) - 20th June

kevinw

International Debutant
Smith's keeping has suddenly got very ragged, not getting down to the low ones at all.

Not sure where this match goes, at what point will Gill feel safe to declare?
England can go hard of course. You'd want a 400 lead - so could be halfway into the third session if 10 more overs of spin are bowled.

India probably need to give England a sniff of getting it, because apart from Bumrah, no other bowler seems capable of taking wickets unless it's to an attacking shot.

I must admit I got a shock when he was picked as he’d played against my young bloke out here a few years back and he certainly didn’t dominate even the Sydney Shires scene.

I know people improve, but second grade shires to test cricket is quite the step up.
England are in their Michael Beer era.

If I were Gill I would be looking at time not runs in terms of a declaration. Given Siraj is at nine, it might be they get bowled out anyway.

But if these two bat another hour he’ll be able to do as he pleases.that being so I would look at time/ overs rather than runs, then work back to a target.

He’ll want enough time that they get a good crack with a second new ball if they need it. England won’t bat to save the game because they lack the skill, defensive technique and the intellectual wherewithal to do so. They’ll try to slog a win which will create a lot of chances. I reckon he’ll want 95-100 overs at them, ideally

edit - nvm, wicket taken which will likely slow things down a bit anyway
