I actually think McCullum has one of the best defensive techniques of any kiwi top order player. (Damning with faint praise?.... yeah, maybe). I also think he's a determined little bugger and will want to prove the likes of Rattue wrong. So I suspect he'll have an ok summer. However, there...

Why does New Zealand not produce good openers? Watching Guptill in this test was depressing to be honest - he's simply not up to it. Here are his stats : v Australia 123 @ 20.50 v Bangladesh 245 @ 245.0 v India 245 @ 27.22 v Pakistan 251 @ 27.88 v Sri Lanka 105 @...

Yeah, go Nicholas - but I think his ability to keep coming has more to do with the size of his testicles....

And yet even that side had some ridiculous third innings collapses, 76 all out to Australia, 110 to Pakistan at the Basin to throw away a winning position, 107 at Edgbaston, 148 in Port Elizabeth, 155 in Kanpur, collapses vs Sri Lanka and another against Pakistan at Hamilton when weather saved...

Are modern batsmen utterly crap? They seem to get hit an awful lot more than they once did. If Ryder had that technique and played 40 years ago, that ball could have ended his career...

You'll drop Brownlie after this? If not, which one?

If that's your argument why bother with any batsmen at all? The fact that Young seemed absolutely clueless to most of the balls he got in this innings seems a reasonable indicator.

WTF is wrong with the folk who run this game? The players get through about 12 overs per hour even with a spinner on, with no apparent effort from the powers that be to improve that, and then they walk off for bad light two days running in the middle of the best partnerships of the innings...

And I (and several others) were very much arguing for 6 batsmen in the week before the test, so my vision isn't just hindsight.

Have you seen the NZ top order bat before at all?

You can have as many bowlers as you want but if you're defending 130 all out you're going to lose...

Anyone else in NZ a little pissed off that the useless @#$%s at Radio Sport aren't even doing coverage of the first half hour?

Cos he gets out playing shots like that? So Starc = Johnson, gets wickets with ****e balls that batsmen go after? To be fair Johnson got his with wide half-volleys, not short ones...

New Feature - No Justice for the Judge

One legacy from Robin Smith is that most modern batsmen followed him into the gym and now have forearms bigger than my legs...

An effort to pick an All-time ODI XI

You can't seriously be calling Viv Richards an allrounder? He's competing for a spot with Botham, Hadlee, Flintoff etc? I'd also have included Dessie Haynes in the list of possibles. Anyway, that aside... my xi : Adam Gilchrist * Sachin Tendulkar Viv Richards Dean Jones Michael Hussey...

How good is the Pakistan Team right now? (AKA the Pakistani climate thread)

Um, I don't think England are going anywhere near Pakistan's turf.... Abu Dhabi's sand maybe, but not Pakistan's turf...

There have been a few tests recently where "50 runs" would have made the difference between winning and losing. Eg, SA v Aus, Zim v NZ (admittedly NZ weren't bowled out), and in NZ's recent history the win over Pakistan at Dunedin. I think NZ's best hope to beat Australia is to hope the pitch...

I'm a 6-batsman fan myself. Either the wicket is flat in which case you need to score a lot of runs to win tests (and yes, save them - sorry, but I'd prefer 0-0 to 0-2) , or else the wicket does a bit in which case four bowlers should be enough. Given early season wickets, and an opposition...
