The greatest batsman who averaged in the 40s

Oops, was meant to be a reply to Vic Orthodox's

The greatest batsman who averaged in the 40s

Fair point on Cullinan - I was looking only at middle-order players. Since I also omitted Bruce Mitchell, SA openers were a definite blind spot. As for England, since so few English middle-order players have averaged 50 (I make it Hammond, Barrington, Compton, Paynter and Root with 1000+ runs)...

The greatest batsman who averaged in the 40s

Trying to pick a top 6 including qualifying batsmen only but trying to have a bowling option without just picking a lesser batsman for allround ability... Australia : Ponsford, Simpson, Harvey, McCabe, Clarke, Walters England : Boycott, Gooch, Ranjitsinhji, May Pietersen, FS Jackson India ...

***Official*** New Zealand tour of Zimbabwe and South Africa 2016

What are the qualifications for being a third umpire do you think? Because if it's just hitting yes/no buttons at complete random I reckon I could do it cheaper than the ones they employ...

Wagner terrifyingly close to averaging under 30. Who would ever have thought that possible??

The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

I'm sure I've seen a stat which says the West Indian bowler of the 70s to mid 90s era with the best win ratio in tests was... Roger Harper.

***Official*** New Zealand tour of Zimbabwe and South Africa 2016

I may be completely off-base but I seem to recall Reiffel fired a few Bangladeshis a series or two back. He doesn't seem to like the minnows...

    All-time XI: England

I find picking English xi's virtually impossible, as it's impossible to judge the merits of the pre WW1 players. Do you include Grace for his first class record? What to make of the bowling averages of Lohmann, Peel, Blythe, Briggs? If we discount them because pitches were so bad, then...

    Never played a Test draft

I attempted another xi like Big Bambino - couldn't think of too many batsmen so it's jam packed with allrounders. Brian Whitfield : another isolation era South African, played against the Rebel Australian side I think. Barry Hadlee : solid opener for Canterbury, good name obviously, unlucky...

*Official* Pakistan in England and Ireland 2016

Some questions - I seem to have been away from cricket for a while.. Can Hafeez bowl? If not with that middle order 3-6 seemingly locked in will they be stuck with just four bowlers? Wasn't Yasir going to be banned for drug use or did I dream that? Where's Junaid Khan? Seems to be a lot of...

Andy Ganteaume - Statistically the Greatest

The past really was a different world, wasn't it?

"200 Test or less" Draft Vote

Great draft, sorry I missed the start of it! I think the best player missed by everyone would be Billy Bates, with 50 wickets at 16 and a useful batsman he was a steal at only 15 tests.... And no-one takes Mominul Haq's numbers all that seriously then? I tried to come up with an xi using none...

    DRS question

This thread highlights an issue with DRS. The umpire should have to say why they give it not out (at club level, we all did when I played. I can remember having a laugh with a bowler when I umpired and told him "He's outside the line, sorry, and though I don't know the name of it, he was...

***Official*** Australia in New Zealand 2016

The only one I'm sure I've seen is batsmen making a late decision to try to flick one over the slips; being on the back foot gives a little more time and if you were about to push to point or shoulder arms it's not such a big change in motion to throw the bat at a rising ball at the last...

So you think pretty much the entire team hooking down long-leg's throat (apart from the guy who sliced to third man) is your batters going back into their shell?

    Your Current World xi

Shakib? Easily forgotten given how little cricket Bangladesh play and his bowling seems to have faded, but still better than any of the above list surely? Ashwin still averages more with the bat than any of those you mention except Duminy. The lack of a Steve Waugh type player who is...

    Your Current World xi

True, but come on, which of Williamson, Root or Smith are you going to drop in order to play de Villiers at 4 or 5? And I'm always picking 5 bowlers if it's remotely sensible : Ashwin fills the bill as a number 7 so I want the keeper at 6. I think even if he has only done it as an emergency...

    Your Current World xi

I'm surprised there isn't a regular rolling thread on this, updated after every series. Probably should wait till the end of the year but I'm going away after Christmas so thought I'd post this after the last round of tests and before the South-Africa vs England series. 1st xi to face Mars ...
