Great match. Shameless bump time for this... https://www.petitionbuzz.com/petitions/testingtimes Is it perverse or harsh to think how a great win could set the Aussies back if kit means they hang on too long to Ponting, Haddin and Johnson?

It's a worry of he thinks the match, rather than him, is the centre of attention.

Have to favour South Africa here given their proven history of dealing with pressure situations. Great Test cricket. Re Steyn, greatness is about situations like this as well as stats.

These three tests vs South Africa...

...here's a petition to try and get a 4th. Don't think this has been posted? Can't see it succeeding in practical terms but even if it embarrassed the ECB it will serve a purpose. https://www.petitionbuzz.com/petitions/testingtimes

The batsmen who made batting look the most arduous and difficult

Was it Peter Willey who adopted the ugliest of open stances? Unlikely find a link I'm afraid. Phillip Hughes ain't pretty.

    Commentating Standard thread

The best know when to shut up, Knowing that silence can be as effective as words is an art and marks the truly good commentators. I'd like to see a commentator who says nothing during the first part of a UDRS review. Yes, we're cricket supporters, we can see it's not a no-ball, no need to say a...

    *Official* West Indies in India

Is Jadeja going to be given a chance as a Test player for India? I only ask because he's in the same team as our summer pro, so have clocked that he got a 300 in his last match and a 5fer in his current one. His 1st class stats look pretty decent.

Thought it was great to see Dravid batting in a cap yesterday. Suited him, he's a bit of a throwback really. Class innings, he seemed very angry at getting out. Seeing how the innings has progressed I guess he had his eye on a GrandDaddy hundred.

    Using the term "rape"

I'd add mong/******/spastic - although not saying it's a problem on here. Gay is an example of a difficult one where a different meaning has leached into common usage outside of the for more than absolute rules. internet. Agree that context and judgement count more than absolute rules.

Short pitched stuf, egos, poor technique and denial . . .

I simply don't know enough about the guy to know if I what I saw on the highlights while at the gym was the result of poor technique, poor attitude, lack of backbone or just poor form. But considering the conditions it was quite shocking stuff.

    Advertising on the Forums

Well, first up I'd definitely ban anyone who makes such spurious comparisons between Paul Scholes and Wayne Rooney. Second, I think border ads work better as per this (also United) site. (Bizarrely, this link is NSFW as for some reason one of the ads is about ****ing kittens - god knows what...

Why I will stop calling players talented: A discussion of terminology

Can't remember. Some may occur during the run-up but I think most of it happens in micro-seconds through the delivery stride. Neil's article about tennis players raises the tantalising possibility that batsmen could look somewhere else than the ball/hand during this period, but I've not heard...

Why I will stop calling players talented: A discussion of terminology

The idea that top batsmen don't just see the ball early, but make a split-second calculation about where it's going before it even leaves the bowlers hand, is covered in Bob Woolmer's coaching book. He writes about research where the lights are killed at the moment of ball release. Top batsmen...
