    England Lions in West Indies

I haven't seen him bowl for a couple of years. Is he still very much medium pace. He always seemed more of a bet as a batsman who could give you a few overs rather than as an all rounder.

    Bits and pieces players

People who have been labelled bits and pieces who have played more than 10 tests have all looked good enough at some point in one discipline for a part of their career. In some cases they have just been inconsistent in their main discipline. Hooper could look a world class batsman in full flow...

    Bits and pieces players

Most teams have a 5th bowling option and very few 4 genuine number 11s. Very rare a team hasn't got a reasonable batsman at 8 and someone capable of 10 to 15 overs on a responsive pitch. The bits and pieces label is probably someone who fills the 5th bowler role and bats 7 or lower. The top 5...

    Bits and pieces players

He's a pretty handy bits and pieces player vs New Zealand, 63 with the bat 29 average as a bowler

    Bits and pieces players

Collingwood could hold his place as a batsman, his bowling was a useful bonus. His fielding may have played a part in his initial selection and was worth 15 to 20 runs a test.

    Bits and pieces players

I guess if a true all rounder is one who is in the side as a batsman and bowler there have been few who managed it for their whole career. Quite a few who would have been for 4 or 5 years. Last few years of Botham would probably qualify as a bits and pieces cricketer. You're probably right...

    Bits and pieces players

Trevor Bailey was without a doubt a fully fledged bowler and had a better batting average than bowling average (29.7 batting 29.2 bowling). Very often players are bits and pieces players in a team are an indication that a country is lacking either good enough bowlers or batsmen. New Zealand have...

Role of leg/wrist spinners in limited overs cricket

It's much harder to play preplanned shots against leg spin. A degree of inaccuracy also helps in this regard. In test cricket there's a different risk reward for the batsmen and they are happy to wait for the inevitable 4 balls. One day and T20 particularly have probably help in a mini England...

    **Official** County Cricket 2018

I think the answer is yes he would. Dawson bowled very well last season. I thought he was ok in his 3 tests without setting the world on fire. Crane really needs 2 seasons just bowling a lot of overs.

*Official* Australia v England post-Ashes ODI series

The problem in the test squad is his stock ball is about 80mph and there's probably only room for him or Anderson at that pace. There's a lot to like about his approach to the game. Ideally he'll fill out a little more and pick up a yard of pace.

Liam Livingstone called up to the England test squad

He batted at 3 for Lancs, against the England management wishes. Unlike the other contenders wants to bat there. Can't really see him playing. If Vince isn't going to play why take him?

***Official*** 5th Test at the SCG

The great West Indes side generally lost in India so it's not true that genuine quicks can take wickets anywhere. Some quicks can cut down there pace and tend to be more successful in England, than out and out quick bowlers. The West Indes quicks all benefited from playing in England and knew...

England Fans - how is this series shaping up compared to 06/07 and 13/14?

The scary thing from an English perspective is he will play at least 2 more a Ashes series in Australia. 2029 might be the next chance to win in Australia. On relatively benign wickets it's hard to see a way to take his wicket!

England Fans - how is this series shaping up compared to 06/07 and 13/14?

Johnson was a good bowler who could bowl some incredible balls. England made him look the greatest bowler of all time in that series, which he isn't. Yes he bowled well, but not well enough to average 12 or 13 on some decent enough batting pitches.

***Official*** 5th Test at the SCG

I think the bottom line is technically Vince (and for that matter Root) look like they have it all. Up against Smith he (and Root) hasn't got the same game sense and hunger for runs. Tests are won by players who know when to go for shots and when they need to just get through an hour of play...

England Fans - how is this series shaping up compared to 06/07 and 13/14?

Warner and particularly Smith are much better batsmen now. Clarke was good but the remainder of the batting were solid pros not test greats. Lyon is a much improved bowler. 2013 bowlers, not convinced Johnson anywhere near as dangerous as we made him look a lot of our much hyped batting line...

He batted at 6/ 7 the season before for Durham.

His First Class bowling figures are still better. Going to be interesting.... have to wish Crane good luck.

***Official*** 5th Test at the SCG

At the time he was a bowler who batted. Quickly changed to a batsman and part time spinner after his one test.

***Official*** 4th Test at the MCG

McGrath had Atherton on toast in one series and Alderman I'm sure had an opener (Gooch?) as a bunny in a series in the 80s. Not being wise after the event but I posted before the first test that Lyon was made to bowl at Ali and would cause him more problems than the seamers. The way he plays...
