***Official*** England in South Africa 2015/16

Has Stokes now broken through? 4 months ago there was a significant call for him to be dropped. I don't think there is much debate he is now one of the top six batsmen in England and his bowling is much improved. The only worry is the frequency with which 6 - 9 have had to make up for the...

***Official*** England in South Africa 2015/16

Looking at centuries per game Stokes is up there with someone like Prior. His big problem is he does get himself out pretty easily on some pretty placid wickets. The biggest plus is he does make runs and take wickets at pretty crucial points in games. I think he's bowling better than his...

I'd agree with that, Bairstow deserves a run behind the sticks for 3 or 4 games, so I think it'll be either him or Stokes at 6. Ansari's chance will come, but I think at least part of a season in division one is required first as part of his development - which leads back to Ali getting...

I think that's probably how they'll go, perm 2 from Woakes, Finn and Wood. Wouldn't be surprised if Woakes got in as the best bat of the 3.

I don't disagree ... I just think he's marginally more likely to do it as both the others bowl so many. In all honesty I see very little between the three of them, which is why I would slightly favour Ali as I think he is the more likely to score some runs on a regular basis when not opening.

Fingers crossed for Stokes. The real question mark over Taylor remains quick bowling rather than county trundler seamers. I guess that question will be getting answered in the next couple of months. I do have sympathy with the selectors in the sense I remember the bad old days of the...

Are you proposing we are more likely to be effective if our spinners bowl another 30 overs per game? If your spinners aren't good enough to bowl long spell in tandem over here then you have to have 4 seamers, because its far to hot and humid for 3 seamers to keep rotating an end. Stokes's...

Well Hales and Taylor in for the 3rd Test. Buttler will almost certainly be one casualty ... will it be the end for Bell, or will Stokes be left out and one of Ali or Rashid miss out once we get to South Africa?

"It opened the door a little and after Moeen had taken his 50th Test wicket in dismissing Sarfraz Ahmed for 32, he, together with Rashid and Mark Wood, were able to finish things off, Wood ending with 3 for 39 and Moeen 3 for 108. Curiously, Moeen becomes the 18th England spinner since the...

I'd mainly agree with that - although I do think the wicket-keeper role in test cricket is changed and I think teams are looking for a batting average of around 35-40. Bowling all rounders you'd probably take batting and bowling averages in the 30s as about par, ideally with a lower bowling...

The problem with dropping Bell at the moment is we haven't got a second opener or established number 5 batsman - so if you drop him there's no real experience in the team. Bell has always been a bit feast or famine. My guess is he's in terminal decline, but I can see the selector's hope he...

I think he deserves his chance at the moment, but I think the twin concerns are his technique is iffy at best, although no worse than Collingwood and he made a career as a decent test player, and if you look at his record he's played a lot of tests without being convincing in any.

But after that series he averaged 36 (2012) and 38 (2014) in first class cricket. Had a reasonable season in 2013 but only averaged over 50 last year. After being dropped he did nothing to justify a recall until this year. Bairstow deserves at least this match on his form last season and...

Not sure he's been treated dreadfully, Bairstow deserved a run on form and Taylor will get his shot. After his promising first test innings Taylor looked out of his depth last time around. I felt he got taken out of the team correctly and told what he needed to do to get back in. For me I...

Our batting is 2 world class player, 2 reasonable middle to lower order batsmen (one of whom is opening), 3/4 unconvincing top order players and a wicket keeper/batsman who has quite made it at this level. Any bowling unit that gets Cook and Root must feel they are well in with a shout.

Not really ... you can start by 6/7 in the morning. I've played in games in the middle east when we've started at 6 to try and avoid the worst of the heat.

I agree ... but the selectors will give him one more shot I think.

I'm not so sure I think they'll ditch Bairstow after the next match if he doesn't score well. He's now had 4 tests and made one score over 50 and generally been unconvincing. I think Ali will get the spinner spot in South Africa, mainly because he's the stronger batsman and the spinner will...

**Official** Pakistan and England in the UAE 2015/16

Some big decisions to be answered over the next 6 days of test cricket with a view to South Africa. Ali vs Rashid for the spinner/all rounder spot in South Africa - as its almost certain Hales will open there. Bairstow playing for a Test future vs Taylor. Maybe Bairstow vs Butler for the...

I do tend to agree but he probably deserves one more shot in Dubai. I think he needs a long enough run to prove he's up to it or not, otherwise we'll be back to the 1980's where the same players went in and out on a revolving door basis. Very unconvinced by him at this level. Comparing...
