Pretty sure the umpires bottled that tbh, obviously I've got some bias in it, but that clearly hasn't stopped moving before he handles it as a fielder is coming to claim it.

Re "Lodge" definition:
To "lodge" something generally means to place it securely or deposit it somewhere, often in a specific location. This implies a need for the item to come to rest rather than being in motion.

One of the worst examples was Ian Healy of all people, whose early work was excellent. Then he became Ian Healy.
Yep. From 1999/00 to 2002/03 provided really good insight. He used to contribute online during matches on websites like wisden.com and was good value there too.

I'm guessing the change was partly because Australia were so dominant at home in that period that he became almost contemptuous of touring sides, and that brought out his abrasive and obnoxious characteristics.

Either way shouldn't have touched it and let Carey try to grab it & the umpires to then work out whether it was dead.
Why? He either thought it was dead ball and therefore can touch it? Or its is ruled out as handling the ball if it is decided not to be dead?

Why make the call himself about whether it's dead? That's how Bairstow got into the trouble. Just leave it alone until the play has definitely stopped.

Because its trapped in his pad?
Then bend your knee so gravity releases the ball back to terra firma. Replay showed it wasn't yet trapped in the pad, it was still moving when he put his fingers around the ball, it was on it's way to being trapped, sure, but not there yet.

All semantics now but yeah, clearest case of ball handling since Bonnie Blue.

Then the argument is it didn't come to rest? Either its got trapped between pad and leg, even momentarily, and he could remove it anyway he liked, or it didn't and he would be out?

I think the umpires handled that with common sense. It's Test cricket, not the time to be experimenting with questionable interpretations of fringe laws when there was clearly no malice intended on the part of the batter. Ball got lodged in his pad, he removed it, play on.

Now that we’ve heard your interpretation; waiting on @GIMH for his opinion on the matter.

He prevented Carey from taking a regulation catch by nefarious means, reacting like he had his hand stuck in the cookie jar and his mum walked into the kitchen and turned on the light.

South Africa has had a shady history, and I don't think I am going too far in saying this incident is probably at the top of the list of bad things they have done.

complete waste of a selection here - Lyon. Shouldve played Boland in a sudden death match on a green deck with overcast skies >> Game would be over by now.

Lyon fine for normal Series where quick bowlers need a break.

It doesnt spin in England anymore.
