Yeah, recovery time is shorter from the sprints. Plenty of space between the qualifying for any distance above 400 metrs. Also the method of qualifying - in athletics you go through with top three in the heats (as they seed the heats), in swimming you're encouraged to swim the fastest time possible as only time qualifies you for the next stage. This drains you.
