Battle of the most memorable moments in Summer Olympics history

ohtani's jacket

State Vice-Captain
1976 -- "Five American boxers - Sugar Ray Leonard, Leon Spinks, Michael Spinks, Leo Randolph and Howard Davis Jr. won gold medals in boxing. This has been often called the greatest Olympic boxing team the United States ever had, and, out of the five American gold medalists in boxing, all but Davis went on to become professional world champions."

1972 -- New Zealand win the Men's Eight in rowing. (This is hugely famous back in NZ.)

Roy Jones Jr vs Park Si-Hun in 1988 Seoul Olympic final. Jones is robbed in the final as the South Korean gets one of the most corrupt boxing decisions (outside Italy) in their favour.
Further to that, NZ referee Keith Walker getting attacked in the ring by rabid South Koreans after a result (which was supposed to have gone their way) went to the opposing boxer.

Think Laydown Sally in the rowing was mentioned earlier.

I also think Shane Kelly should be included too. 1996 Atlanta Games, then world champion Kelly was one of the hot favourites in the 1km time trial only to suffer a cruel blow when his foot slipped off the pedal after the starter's orders.

I'll second this. Ref was in error, apparently.
I think it'll be fitting if this wins. What with the result of a match decided by an administrative decision based on political ideological grounds. Sums the Olympics up for mine.

I believe these have not been nominated:

- The Black Power salute in Mexico, 1968
- Abebe Bikila winning the marathon barefooted
- Dick Fosbury doing the Fosbury flop for the first time and claiming the high jump title
- Voted #1 sports moment in Dutch history: the men's volleyball team winning the Atlanta gold after beating Italy in a five-set nailbiter
- Van den Hoogenband vs. Thorpe, Sydney 2000
- That Swiss lass nearly dying to complete the marathon (was it LA 1984?)

Those two are already nominated, dont know about others.

No disrespect to the achievement and its place in Dutch sporting history, just curious, is there any reason (other than a hard fought victory) why this should be a memorable olympic event ?
