Debate thread for 2024 Ranking of batsmen poll

Fair comment. Perhaps I should have written: Being an attacking left hander who averaged almost 60 in Tests, including an 80+ average v Australia, makes him worthy of consideration in our extended list of 75.

... and plenty of these guys getting votes each round (Laxman, Clarke, Pietersen. Jayawardene etc) bit only McCabe getting a very recent mention. Mitchell is 4 or 5 spots too low. There are others more expendable IMO. I thought we were judging on Tests only in both polls. There is a lot less...

    Inzamam vs Gooch vs Chanderpaul

The rest of that sentence is.

    Inzamam vs Gooch vs Chanderpaul

My vote goes to Gooch. An opener, IMO, is more important than a batsman coming in at 5 or lower (Chanderpaul - whose average is boosted by a lot of red ink). As for Inzy, he was undoubtedly a good bat but a poor runner between wickets and a liability in the field.

But an inspired selection. I can't ignore the fact that Paynter, in the 7 Tests he played against the Don, had a superior average to him. Even if I remove the 3 not outs you mentioned in post 693, he still averages better than Bradman in those Tests. Being an attacking left-hander and an...

Debate thread for 2024 Ranking of batsmen poll

There are numerous players with 20 or more Tests who played exclusively between the wars and who wouldn't be out of place in our list. Ponsford 29 Tests, 2122 @ 48.27; McCabe 39 Tests, 2748 @ 48.21; Jardine 22 Tests, 1296 @ 48.00; Hendren 51 Tests 3525 @ 47.63; Leyland 41 Tests, 2764 @ 46.06...

    2024 Ranking of Batsmen Poll

We have more than sufficient interest to extend our list to 75 and we re-commence voting next Thursday.

Debate thread for 2024 Ranking of batsmen poll

I've already considered and voted for Bradman, Hobbs, Hutton, Headley, Compton et al who played either side of a war. Exclusively between the wars covers 2 decades - enough for a player to have a significant career.

How do we judge "quality"? If it's based on averages then Barrington is underrated. If it's based on aesthetics then Gower should be on the list and Barrington would be overrated. One of the deficits I see is the lack of players whose careers fell exclusively between the wars. I know I've had...

    2024 Ranking of Batsmen Poll

I take a "No" as meaning they are happy simply to stop at 50. Having said "No" doesn't preclude them from voting when we continue next week. The next poll I had intended was for wicketkeepers (a Top 15 or 20 would suffice) then , perhaps, for all-rounders. I'm always open for suggestions.

    2024 Ranking of Batsmen Poll

I'll be counting myself as a 'yes' so we only need a couple more to continue. Mind you. despite being a retired maths teacher, I may have difficulty counting to ten.

Which current players are/will be ATGs?

Inzamam and Chanderpaul had serious flaws IMO. Innzy's poor running between wickets - I'd love to know how many run outs he was involved in and how many quick singles he missed. Chanderpaul batted too low in a pretty weak side. 73.9% of his innings were at # 5 or lower. This gave him an unusual...

    2024 Ranking of Batsmen Poll

Years or Test - Which is the best way to test longevity?

Definitely years. Imagine Hobbs' record of games had WWI not intervened and if there had been more than 15 series (between 1907/08 and 1930) in which he could participate.
