Arsenal's best signing of the window by a country mile. All thanks to Kai Havertz for getting injured too haha.

Will be a massive needle mover if they play him where he should be playing. Fortunately I suspect Arteta has other plans..

I suspect he'll take Martinelli's starting spot. Is that where Arteta should play him?

The most intriguing option would be for him to play centrally (i.e., his best position), but this would require Odegaard to play deeper and/or one of Rice/Zubimendi to be dropped, which seems unlikely (and for some games at least, unwise). Most likely he will be deployed in wide areas and/or as an auxiliary attacker I suspect. So we'll see how that goes. In any event, Arsenal certainly don't have the "lack of depth" defence to hide behind if things go pear shaped this year.

Not sure why. The guy can sign for who he wants and he played yoofball for Arsenal so it was always a risk. The Gibbs-White thing was much more of a farce.
I think the main gripe appears to be that Spurs had approx a clear 2 week period during which Arsenal were not interested in the player, in which they could have sealed the deal, but Levy bollocksed it up by drawing it out by trying to haggle over a couple of quid, only for Arsenal to then swoop back in and tie the whole thing up in like half a day. Most of the ire I've seen is not related to the player himself, and his choice to go elsewhere, but at the inability of the club to get a deal that was apparently all but signed over the line when they basically had an open goal.

Ah, so the fans are pissed off with Levy being Levy. I mean, as sure as night follows day Levy will nickel and dime something and cost his team more than he ever would have saved. Not at all the same as with Sol Campbell though where the fans blamed the player.

No indeed, it's definitely different. The comparisons to Campbell are just amusing meme-fodder. Though doubtless the reception Eze gets when Arsenal travel to Tottenham henceforth will not be especially positive.

The coys meltdowns are mainly directed at Dirty Dan but there’s some amusing ‘Arsenal and Palace colluded to **** us over’ conspiracy theories in there too

No, not in my opinion. Eze is a much better central player and should either be an 8 or 10.

Odegaard is the guy that should be looking over his shoulder... but hes Arteta's guy.

If he replaces Odegaard I don't really think he's much of an upgrade. I know a lot of Arsenal fans have turned on Odegaard a bit, but to me it looks more like they're not creating forward passing options for him as well as they used to.

If he comes in for Martinelli it's not a great stylistic fit, they're really depending on Saka for penetration. But Martinelli isn't really offering anything at the moment, so it's probably what they'll do first. They'd want to pair Eze with a fast, attacking LB, but Arteta likes big lads at full-back and will probably keep preferring Calafiori over Lewis-Skelly.

I suspect Calafiori will be preferred for away games that are perceived to be potentially difficult and/or games against teams with a decent attack, whereas MLS will come in for matches where Arsenal are expected to dominate possession and be on the front foot throughout.

This is just the next stage of the Gyokores narrative - 'he doesn't get the service he needs'.

That service should be coming from Odegaard, it's certainly not on Rice or Zubi to be the creative option in midfield. Overall Odegaard is the better midfielder imo but when it comes to a circuit breaker creative central player Eze is far superior. This is an enormous season for the Arsenal captain.

For me the most telling thing about this Eze signing is it's apparently in response to the Havertz injury... if that is the case who is currently back up to Gyokores?

Spot on, as that's where he's played at Palace. Sure he drifts left from time to time, but that hasn't been his starting position. Which is why England haven't seen the best of him when they've played him on the left of a front three. Anyway, apparently we're trying to sign Pino (of whom I know virtually nothing) or Southampton's Dibling as a replacement. I gather that Everton are also after Dibling, so we'll see what happens overthe next week or so.

Honesty forces me to admit that Palace's first round match in the Conference had slipped through my radar until I accidently found it on Channel 5 last night. Good to win, but 1-0 isn't a huge lead to take into the second leg. And the pedant in me forces me to point that this isn't actually Palace's first foray into Europe, as they took part in the Anglo-Italian Cup in 1972-73, the highlights being a 3-0 wallopping of Lazio at Selhurst park and a 1-0 win away to Bari. They also took part in 1970-71 and beat Cagliari (Luigi Riva's side) 1-0 at home and, astonishingly, won 2-1 away to Italian champions Inter Milan (including Facchetti, Mazzola, Burgnich, Boninsegna et al).

I wish the Anglo-Itallian cup was still a thing. In my mind it was always a second division competition but obviously not from what you have said there.
