The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

State Regular
Recently I was trying to rank the greatest teams in history and had the '53 England team I think 4th or 5th.

But what do you think was the best English team and lineup (that took the field together) from that period?
Personally I would say the team that played 6 Tests between 17 December 1954 at Sydney and 28 March 1955 in Auckland. 5 wins and a rain-affected draw that would also probably have been won. Three wins in a row in Australia. Excludes the first Test in Brisbane when England put their opponents in, picked no spinner, dropped twelve catches and lost by an innings. The turnaround was remarkable.

Nine players appeared in all six matches: Hutton, May, Cowdrey, Bailey, Evans, Tyson, Statham, Appleyard and Wardle. In Australia the other two places were filled by a combination of Compton, Edrich and Graveney. The Middlesex pair went home before the New Zealand leg so Reg Simpson came in. To pick an eleven, I would go for Melbourne and Adelaide when Compton and Edrich both played and the series was won.

Bedser, Trueman and Laker weren't needed. They may have enjoyed more illustrious careers than others before or after, but Hutton was a shrewd judge of form, character and conditions, and his selections paid off.

For reference, this is the team Cardus et. all were referring to.

Archie MacLaren*
C.B Fry
K.S Ranjitsinhji
Stanley Jackson
Johnny Tyldesley
Dick Lilley+
George Hirst
Gilbert Jessop
Len Braund
Bill Lockwood
Wilfred Rhodes

first two tests both ended in draws due to rain, and Australia did win the series 2-1.

Bowling a bit crap outside of Lockwood and Rhodes, but gun batting lineup tbf. Hella deep.

Red

The normal awards that everyone else has
Aura/Swagger XI

Brian Lara
Sachin Tendulkar
Don Bradman
Viv Richards
AB DeVilliers
Gary Sobers
Adam Gilchrist
Wasim Akram
Shane Warne
Dennis Lillee
Curtly Ambrose

This XI would beat any combo that could be complied against them in a test. Screw selecting openers to open.

I know most of these episodes are horrible, but Kimber normally rescues them, but this was just bad from everyone.

Think there were 5 good picks the entire episode.

The first 2-3 rounds are good, although some of the fielders need to get picked a bit lower.
After that though, they were just picking anyone who's a normal good slipper. Hooper, McMillan etc really got missed out
