Wasn't this simply a case of an underdog winning a match from a seemingly beaten position? That's always going to raise support and interest. (Remember how the Aussies got ribbed when they couldn't defend 430?) If you win consecutive World Cups you're obviously going to make yourself a target, and you ought to be used to that by now.
The comments I talk about has nothing to do with this loss directly... SA fully deserved to lose; I`m actually quite happy they did, because it gave them an important lesson in game management and a certain level of humiliation in terms of never taking the eye off the ball and/or under rating your opponent.

It should more pour scorn on Aussie rugby really that they've fallen so low that the English and Kiwis are showing support and sympathy for them!! Turns out that level of support is now dead as they seem to be well and truly back.
I really want the Aussies to do well, it great for the 4 nations and the rugby world. I also really want Wales and Scotland to pick there game up...

Most British and Irish rugby fans feel indifferent towards SA, which in practice means wanting them to win fairly often because they have much stronger rivalries with other countries. There's a mild preference towards Australia right now because they're such heavy underdogs, but if they were playing SA in a World Cup final almost all English rugby fans would be cheering for SA. I might slightly support Scotland against SA because they're always underdogs, or favour France against SA because the French team plays such beautiful rugby, but I'd full-throatedly support SA against England.

Sorry, some over sensitivity here from the two SA fans. I don't think NH sides have any particular beef with SA beyond typical international rugby rivalry and nothing in this thread over the past few pages has shown any particular antipathy towards SA.

Maybe not here, but this is such a small rugby community. Off the Ball tries to put out the message that I am basically a murderer.

Here is some of there ramblings

These arent random podcasts eiher. They even used Off the Ball shitheads in Chasing the Sun 2 series, also the whole Bongi incident with press and its hangers on..

Dont forget Matt Williams and his goons
Clive Woodward
Stephen Jones.

While the likes of these idiots and their hangers on dont give me sleepless nights, it is also bullshit that it doesnt happen. It goes way beyond the so called "sporting rivalry"

Rivalries are what makes the game special. Without them the game itself would be boring as all hell.
It's been an awful long time since an ABs/Wallabies encounter has got the blood pumping. Aus getting good again is an exciting prospect.

Is Welsh rugby dead? Have to say I don't know details but after 15 years of some genuinely great Welsh national sides it's astonishing that they can't sustain more than 2 professional sides.

I've read some think it would be good to get those 2 sides into the English Premiership, would get a lot more interest back into the game playing there.

Are there actually more than 2 nations in the world who now consider rugby as their Number 1 sport?

Rugby is the biggest sport in Madagascar, for the record. Georgia is pretty close between rugby and football.

I guess I meant of those with significant playing numbers. Fiji and Samoa would probably count too I guess?
Madagascar has 40,000 registered players. Sri Lanka has had over 100,000 at various points too. Those are pretty decent playing numbers really. Wikipedia's quite interesting (if accurate) about Madagascan rugby - regular attendances over 10,000 and with 40,000 for the grand final. Popular with women as well as men.

Fiji, Samoa, Tonga too - though I think league is also pretty popular, the internet insists that union remains more popular.

Women's and Men's Rankings | World Rugby

The World Rankings are quite interesting when you look below the Top 10. Wales are closer to Spain below them than they are to Fiji above them. Madagascar at 44 men and 31 women. Canada is interesting, their Men's team now right down in 25th, whilst their women ride high in 2nd. How has that happened?

Australia's win in SA looks to have all but guaranteed who the 6 seeds will be in the World Cup draw.

The Canadian women deserve that ranking - their last two games against NZ have been a win and a draw. I wonder if the North American sports appeal more to Canadian men than women - gridiron and ice hockey primarily. There's definitely been some decent Canadian men - we've had a few play in our NPC, such as Adam Kleeberger. Interestingly, across the board in Canada, sport participation rates are significantly lower for women than men, but there's articles going back more than 2 decades highlighting growth in participation rates for women's rugby in Canada.

On the men's side when professionalism happened there were a bunch of teams in that second tier - Canada, Argentina, Italy, Japan, Romania, USA - that ended up going very different ways. While Argentina, and to a less successful extent Japan and Italy, have managed to thrive in the professional era, Canada and Romania sunk without trace. The US seemed to have focused more on the 7s side. Canada even made the men's WC QFs in 1991.

Yeah I watched the highlights of those 2 games and was wondering what the beep is Canada doing to get these results

Not having grown up or ever been to Canada, my opinion carries little weight, but I think it may have something to do with Ice Hockey being the premier 'physical' sport for Canadian Men, and for whatever reason this isn't mirrored amongst the female population in terms of participation (this could change with the advent of the PWHL though).

Interesting odds on the sportsbook for Wallabies/SA

Might put a couple quid on each of the Wallaby win outcomes tbh.

Yeah, Canada were always a Top 16 Team but have seemingly dropped right away. Meanwhile, the women have flourished and the predicted semi with NZ in the World Cup really could go either way. I just find it odd that there should be such a discrepancy between the two teams.

But agree with what others have said that Ice Hockey could be a key factor.

My take is Canada got slightly shafted by union going pro.

Back when the sport was amateur (at least officially: looking at you here NZ and Australia :innocent:) the Canucks used to punch well above their weight, including a quarter-final place in the 91 WC (secured with wins over Fiji and Romania) and a rib-tickling (for those of us of a non-Leekist bent) win at the old Arms Park back in 1993 with Gareth Rees (who definitely sounds like he should've been playing for the home side) slotting a last minute conversion to secure a two point win.

However once it went open union remained a largely amateur concern in Canada and they couldn't seriously compete with professionals any longer.

Meanwhile, apropos of mentioning the Welsh, anyone care to hazard a guess which Taff legend's son this is:

She rejoices in the rather awesome drag name of Heidi Heights.
