South Africa team selection

I think it’s a mixture of both imo. Shuks has his ways and his ways have brought success. Do think he has a mentality that the team comes before records? Yes. I believe they agreed on four sessions and when Mulder got so close he didn’t want to budge on that. I also believe Mulder is fully aware of what people online (us included) have been saying about him for years. I absolutely believe he might not feel like he “deserves” a record like that just yet.
And that is exactly why Shuks and his teammates should have given him the confidence to say screw that... go for it.

It honestly doesn’t bother me as much. I’ve never been that much of a stats guy, but I do believe he should have just done it. Rather do it and ask for forgiveness they say!

I think it hasn't quite sunk in yet even for Mulder who rather naively was talking about if he ever got this chance again, we've been playing Test cricket for over 100 years and only 2 players from our region has scored over 300, Mulder might genuinely be the last South African to ever get close to this opportunity for the rest of our lifetime, that it was declared because a coach couldn't show some common sense and now laid down a marker for future SA batters does bother me.

I'm not that much of a stats guy either; but this for me is not about the stat. It's about confidence, it is about team building, it's about belief. It's about showing yourself and your teammates that you are good enough. Let's not pretend that the psychology of it isn't real.

This is exactly the attitude and circumstance that has resulted in SA being called chokers, it's exactly the attitude that holds SA back in big situations.

Being a team man, hard working, disciplined and dedicated is great and important. Something SAs pride themselves on. But when that gives you a chance to do something great don't hold back, grab it with both hands, don't use those things as excuses, to not go for it.

100% @StephenZA

I said it at the start of play yesterday. Getting these records are a requirement against this level of quality otherwise you have to be concerned by our levels. But these were part of the baby steps and growth of this team. Going on and doing what he did yesterday was great for the psychological side anyway but climbing the top of the mountain in this moment would always be a tick in the box and going for that 400 was it.

The ultimate killer is this, a SA player who is coming into his own and starting to show the ability and skill we thought he had, had a great innings, a truly world class innings. In a team position that if he solidifies creates so many extra opportunities for the SA test team as a whole. If he had got 389 out we would have been applauding. However because of a decision that was made we are not talking about that, and that was entirely foreseeable, and is sad. I still think it was a great innings, something to be proud of. But now is tinged with disappointment, that need not have been.

I also wonder if Mulder being the one on the verge of the record was also a factor. Do we think they would have declared if it was Temba or Aiden?

Btw, how did Subrayen’s arm look yesterday? I was surprised at the side on stills. His elbow looked relatively straight.

I've always been **** at judging this as it looks like you could question it but it also feels like I've always seen worse than him.

To get to this point is a credit in itself because he had a very good U19 career but was said to be chucking from soon in his professional career and twice I think. I remember when it was announced, Poms Ben Duckett and Reece Topley were tagging each other as they were on the England U19 side we beat in the WC.

He has plugged away for 10 years in domestic cricket to get here.

I’ve seen some really bad angles from him live but he looked okay in this match. He doesn’t have that classical offspinner action so there is always a suspicion of bend there.

Whatever it takes!!!
There is an aspect to this you guys are missing. When Lara first got the record in 1994 and then made the 501 as well within the next month or so, a lot of it went to his head, based on his own interviews and what others have said. It took a long time for him to find himself again as a consistent batsman, almost 6 or 7 years including issues due to injuries etc.

If Mulder felt it would have been too much for him to handle as an individual and if he prefers a quieter time of it around cricket, that is a perfectly understandable thing AFAIC. As a volunteering counsellor at work, quite a few of the folks I have spoken to find it difficult to manage sudden stardom or fame, even within the circles of an IT organization. Its probably quite natural if he felt some nerves about achieving something this early in his career when he has especially not had much success outside of games against lower ranked teams. Its amazing how little concern is shown about the actual individual and so much of the reaction has been about "I feel it has let me down etc etc". As hard as it is to accept, sometimes these kind of decisions can also be personal and its just better to realize and accept that and move on IMHO.

I think there were positive signs from every player in this series except:
1. Breetzke: Don’t think he is an opener and it’s going to be tough for him to crack the middle order.
2. Kwena: Talent is there but needs to learn how to string together spells.
3. de Zorzi: I think he is clearly falling behind in the pecking order now. Looks like he needs to go dominate at a level lower for a while. Averages under 30 now after 13 matches.
4. Senokwane: Just the one innings. Can’t judge him.

Just an aside but I was watching the build up today and Polly was talking about batting technique. What a cricketer he was, if Kallis didn’t exist I’m sure he could have averaged closer to 40 with the bat in Tests. Has a mind for the game.

It's a surprise that Breetzke has got dropped even from a second string t20i side this tri-series. Has a decent record at international level. These scores can may be help him get back into the team but with Brevis and Pretorius in, it's going to be tough.
They've gone with Rubin Hermann so let's see how it goes in this tri-angular.

I suspect he will be in the next 50-over squad.

Lots of white ball cricket coming up.
