Nah it definitely wasn't as bad as it has been here or was in that 2022 summer. Those 22 balls where absolutely horrible. Became dogfood by the 10th over and the #5-#7's of every team made runs for fun.

I think a reason why we are seeing so many more ball changes these days is because teams are asking for umpires to use the ball guage a lot more.

Pre covid I remember umpires would rarely use the gauge. Post covid it seems mandatory that when a ball change is requested the umpires must put it through the guage to placate the captain. That's definitely contributed to the increased number of changes.
