Some of their late 80's/early 90's ones look like absolute shockers. I think the seamers individually are at least OK ones.
I think in 93 there were blokes like Ilott, Ealham, Caddick and McCague having a crack. Very very grim indeed

I was thinning of the 46/47 Ashes as being potentially worse. I don't think Tongue or Bashir should make the average CC attack let alone a test side. This has to be top 3 at least.
Quite possibly.

In terms of fitness for use in the conditions, you might want to dig out some our attacks in India and SL in the days when we were scraping the barrel for our spinners. Batty and Ansari ffs.

Comparable? Smith’s made two tons on roads against barely FC attacks. Pant has taken down the best bowlers in the world home and away while batting higher up the order
you can only put away whats put in front of you , which he's done so far

And Caddick was on debut, so it's even worse than it looked on paper. Whereas Foster was at the opposite end of his career when he played in that series.

Sometimes it's just where they were at in terms of their career. Our attack at the start of the 2003 series against SA looks great on paper, but Gough was past it, Anderson was a kid and Harmison & Flintoff were still learning their trade at that level.

Gill suddenly giving Tendulkar-Dravid level vibes of solidity and composure, especially with Pant at the other end. Some turnaround for him. He's even eliminated that hanging the bat outside off habit he had all this time.
He is equally impressive without Pant aswell?

Never forget that Australia played Xavier Doherty in test cricket

No exaggeration to say that he was a very ordinary club bowler at virtually every other time

Yeah but you’re saying he’s comparable to a bloke who’s put away a ton better bowlers home and away, for longer and in harder conditions. That’s not comparable.
we can have this convo again after the Ashes then, if India's bowling attack does not suffice as good enough

I always rated Pant but him actually managing to replicate his success batting up the order in overseas conditions has legitimately shocked me. Near uncharted territory for a keeper bat.

Yeah terrible. 89 was rubbish too but some of those blokes had ok reputations and were probably just past it. The 93 outfit was properly horrendous
89 was awful as well Yeah, I don't really think the English attack between whenever West Indies broke Willis and the mid 90s was even test standard tbh, Botham breaking his ribs in Australia after that horror Windies tour is just one more element to it. 1987–1993 attack was straight garbage, Fraser seemed good but dissapeared for years after 1990.

This will be my annual post pointing out that Fraser was absolute quality and very underappreciated.

Gough and Fraser were the only two actually good pacers england had for any stretch in that decade. Headley was probably the best one by far , just couldn't stay fit.
