South Africa's win is the 666th successful 4th innings chase in 2585 Tests. Aiden Markram's century is the 85th to be scored in a successful 4th innings chase. It is only the 4th 100 in 40 successful 4th innings chases at Lord's.
Nice stats. Was Nissanka’s ton in the 4th innings the previous instance of this happening?

That’s a hell of a lot of 4th innings chase successes mind. So 25.76% of tests have ended up with the team winning by chasing in the 4th innings.

I‘d have expected a far lower percentage than that.

Any time* a team wins by wickets it's a successful fourth innings chase. They might only need one run, like the English at Sydney in 1932.

Australian A team selections are usually mystifying, so nothing's new there. And the strategy always seems to be 'work it out when the need arises'.

Richardson got a shoulder operation and probably wouldn't have played any four day games until the new season anyway. But don't know why they'd leave out Morris except that they're being hyper careful with his work load (wish they'd fix his runup, might actually reduce stress on his body). O'Neill is almost certainly looked upon as being too slow.

Some of the selections I like - Nisbet is like a combination of Alderman and McGrath in style and Jackson bowls a very heavy ball. Thornton's a very destructive bowler on his day but lacks consistency. Stanlake's been a disappointment, his lack of fitness (apparently partly self-inflicted) has been an issue. The blandest sections are Perry, who looked promising several years ago but has gone sideways since then, and Elliot, who isn't fast enough.

Vidler and Beardman are two bowlers of great potential who might have been better picks. I think the overall future fast bowlers will be fine fitness permitting (big if, that one), but it could take a considerable time to bed in a new attack and the selectors might actually need to consider rotating bowlers to find the best combination, something they don't do at the moment.
Should the Aussies make wholesale changes for their next test series or stick with theses till the Ashes are over ?

Tbf, while batting in the final innings is usually harder, it is toss dependent, sometimes the better team either put the other team or get put in themselves and go on to dominate

And the argument comes full circle.

Bavama was also dropped, at 0 wasn't it?
Yeah, but dropped by Smith who is pretty much an elite slip, so that kinda negates the elite slip argument part.

Also even with both teams not batting for long and conditions favouring bowling, there were several moments when the game situation where it felt like both teams were desperate for a quality 5th bowler.

Even Australia with 3 quality pacers, a quality spinner and an okay medium pace batting all rounder still felt light in the bowling in this game.

TLDR: A quality 5th bowler, elite slips, lower order batting are all important.
