Absurdly Awesome Cricket Stats

Interesting. Despite the Windies being considered to have such weak batting in Lara’s time, plus his penchant for big scores, here are some players from stronger batting teams with a higher percentage of top scoring innings.

Barrington
Hutton
Hammond
Gavaskar

Note: only going down to 32 occasions of top scoring in the innings.

After 2019 Ashes whenever Smith scores a hundred, in majority of time either of Khawaja, lebuschagne or head outscored him to become the highest scorer.
There is the opposition in the match too. It's why I think if you looking overall it's maybe better than just looking at your own team. But both can give different answers to what you looking for.

Have the numbers for Don?

Not sure if it is awesome or not

in 21st century, only Glenn McGrath has a better average against top 3 Test batters (min. 50 wickets). McGrath’s average is 24.16. Cummins : 24.2.

There is no doubt that Donald Bradman was the Greatest Batsman to ever exist, but bowlers from his era are often underestimated, I feel like a large element of this comes down to the impact Bradman himself had on the numbers of some of the marquee bowlers of his age. First, I will post the actual final average of bowlers and then I will post the average of those same bowlers when Bradman wasn't playing...

Alec Bedser

Actual Average:
24.89
Without Don: 21.34

Hedley Verity

Actual Average:
24.37
Without Don: 22.40

Maurice Tate

Actual Average:
26.16
Without Don: 22.92

Jim Laker

Actual Average:
21.24
Without Don: 19.72

Walter Hammond (I know)

Actual Average:
37.80
Without Don: 33.16

Learie Constantine

Actual Average:
30.10
Without Don: 26.78

obviously there are more names, but these pop into my head almost immediately. Now for bowlers who did well against Australia in games with the Don and the wonderful support anyway, before the war.

Headley Verity: 59 @ 27.22
Bill Voce: 35 @ 22.94
Ken Farnes: 38 @ 28.02
Bill Bowes: 30 @ 24.70
Alexander Bell: 27 @ 27.13
Herman Griffith: 14 @ 28.07
Jack White: 28 @ 27.28

You forgot the most significant perhaps.

Larwood actual average: 28.35
Without Bradman: 23.18

I also doubt its a coincidence that in the Bodyline series Larwood took his best figures (and only 5’fers) in the match that Bradman didn’t play.

4 players have scored 500+ runs in a series without scoring a century

5 Test series
Hill 521 @ 52.10 4 fifties
Hunte 550 @ 61.11 6 fifties

6 test series
Atherton 553 @ 46.08 6 fifties
Thorpe 506 @ 42.16 5 fifties

Notably, Thorpe had 2 ducks, Hill had 1. And Hunte did not even score a 90, with his highest score being 89

Cummins holds the record for most wickets in a series without a 5’fer, with 29 @ 19.62 in the 2019 Ashes. 8 others have taken 25+ in a series without a 5’fer, Garner doing it thrice.

Keepers have had 25+ dismissals in a series 16 times, Haddin still holding the record with 29 in the 2013 Ashes.

The absurd part? Australians have achieved this feat 12 times with 6 keepers, with South Africa at 2 and England and India both at 1.

Multiple times
Gilchrist 4
Healy 3
Marsh 2

Others - Haddin, Russell, Carey, Paine, Boucher, Waite, Pant

How many of those 16 have been on home soil? I ask as pace bowling (and catches behind) seem the major source of wickets in Australian home tests. Having said that, Healy was often the beneficiary of Warne magic.

Australians - 5 times in England, 7 in Australia (once against Windies and once against India)
South Africans - Once in England, once in SA vs NZ
Russell - In South Africa
Pant - In Australia
