Absurdly Awesome Cricket Stats

That AB innings was phenomenal. Everyone just dead batted the innings. They scored 143 from 143.1 overs which begs the question of what's the highest innings score at exactly 1rpo or less?

For someone who was not generally a slip fielder, Tony Lock’s record is exceptional. Mostly known for his work at shortleg, in 654 matches he took 830 catches.

Compared to Hammond, one of the great slips with 819 catches in 634 matches.
Top 10 catches per match ratios for England-qualified fielders. Qualification 500 first-class catches.

Peter Walker 1.49, Roope 1.48, Trescothick 1.43, Tunnicliffe 1.39, John Langridge 1.37, Hick 1.34, Hammond 1.29, Lock 1.27, Braund 1.27, Sharpe 1.25.

South African born Walker was a short-leg specialist like Lock. The rest were slip fielders.

Top 10 catches per match ratios for non England-qualified fielders. Qualification 300 first-class catches.

Hugh Trumble 1.55, Martin van Jaarsveld 1.53, Bob Simpson 1.48, Mark Taylor 1.38, Stephen Fleming 1.38, Mahela Jayawardene 1.30,
Michael Di Venuto 1.24, Albert Trott 1.24, Ken Grieves 1.23, Chamara Silva 1.23.

Trott played for England, but only after representing Australia.

Trumble another bowler.. I found one reference to him as being a slip fielder from another CW poster but nothing else.

Yes he fielded at slip. Also got quite a few caught and bowled like Lock. The overall standard of fielding in the Golden Age was poor, but there were several outstanding individuals.

Mark Waugh was eleventh in the non-English list, followed by Brian Lara.

Very impressive for any of those bowlers to be up there. Truly must have been amazing whilst they were actually fielding.

That is, although India came very close back in 1962 : the innings where Gibbs had the remarkable figures of 53.3-37-38-8. He took 8 for 6 in his final spell of about 16 overs.

This NZ 2nd innings , though much lower, is also worth a look (though probably wasn't much fun to watch).

3 days lost to rain, and they still managed to bowl over 200 overs with 2 innings breaks. A great defensive effort from NZ to save the test and prevent a 3-0 whitewash. tbf, Fazal could only bowl 6 overs in the second innings which likely saved them.

Shoutout to Hanif who on a damp matting wicket scored a ton when only a single other player in the match managed over 30.

David Steele scored 1182 runs in 31 completed innings at an average of 38.12 in the 1978 FC season. His younger brother John Steele also scored exactly 1182 runs in 31 completed innings, to finish at an average of 38.12.

Tony Greig took 4/53 vs Australia in his debut in 1972. A decade later, Ian Greig took 4/53 on his debut vs Pakistan.

Did Leach have the lowest average to date before his 92 Vs Ireland? Woakes, Broad, Curran and Stone were the rest of the lower middle to late order in that test.
