While I agree Steyn is better than both, I feel the reason folks here give are not clear at all. I don't buy the best in flat era argument for example.

Imran may not have had the excellence that Ambrose had in those places but his record feels more versatile. He had good to great series in more places.

Exactly. He also had excellent series in Aus and Eng in 81 and 87 respectively.

He simply was more proven across conditions.

And despite all the claims otherwise, there is no way we can be sure how Ambrose would have done with more tests in SC, especially after his pace declined in 94.
