James Anderson States His Age Is Not The Reason He Is Not Performing These Ashes

personally I'd let him retire on his own terms and not force him out of the team or anything but I wouldn't put his position on a pedestal any more like it has been. He'll be rotated frequently and considered higher on green tops but on flat pitches like India I wouldn't bother

It’s just unfortunate when you reach a certain age, any drop in performance will lead to questions being raised as to whether it’s a terminal decline. It says a bit about him that he’s got to 40 before they’re being asked.

But what some are saying is true, age can hit you fast in sport. I presume he will get a rest in Leeds and have an Old Trafford Ashes send off, which he deserves. Amazing longevity and output, really.

I'd bet a hundred Anderson has played his last Test. Sad way to go out but yet another cricketer not knowing when to retire (like Warner)

he doesn’t have much pace to be threatening
what's funny is that his average speed last test was quicker than both Broad and Robinson.

I don't think he's bowled badly at all tbh, just lacking support from the rest of the attack and the conditions.

What the main issue for England should be is whether Anderson is good enough to make the squad , if the answer is yes then he shouldn't be forced to retire , if no then don't pick him simple

I think it’s mostly swung from the hand for him instead of late like it often does. Whether they’re to do with something he’s doing with his action or just atmospherics, it makes him a fair bit easier to play. He hasn’t been awful but a fair bit short of where they need him to be, maybe a fraction too short to catch the edge

The flip side of scoring your runs quickly is your bowlers don’t get long to rest. Especially telling in a crammed series like this
Yeah, the decline in his 2nd dig bowling efforts over the past couple of years has been notable. The **** would probably go on playing until he's 50 if cricket allowed half-time substitutions.

Yeah, this was very much true with Neil Wagner. Was his usual psychotic self, happily bumping away up to the 2021 WTC. Then he had a 6 month rest period that included a covid lockdown, came back noticeably slower and has looked a fundamentally inferior bowler ever since. It's remarkable that Anderson has managed to last as long as he has before starting to look his age.

Wagner's been doing Pilates and apparently his back feels much freer. Maybe Jimmy should take it up.
