Which are the best performing batsman and bowler to tour each test country?

If we are talking about the best batsmen to tour each country, who debuted post world war 2, then for England, the answer should be Viv Richards clearly. Sure, Waugh and Dravid average higher, but the difference between an average of 64 and 68/74, is less than the difference between between an SR of 73 and one in low fifties or forties. Plus Waugh for majority of his peak played bad England attacks. And between Dravid and Viv, the average difference is a mere three or four, and SR difference is massive.

Viv is a good shout.

Dravid had an excellent debut tour in England, then a monster 2002 tour, poor 2007 tour and an ATG tour in 2011 against Anderson and co.

VIv had his ATG tour in 76, another excellent tour in 80, and then three decent-ish tour after that. So its close but you're right I may give it to him.

For Aus, between Sachin and Viv, Id go Viv marginally, because of some reasons. Viv averages 48 and Sachin 53, but Viv again is more attacking, although Sachin also nearly strikes at 60, so the SR point does not have as much as weightage as one would have thought. Also, in Aus, Sachin‘s stats are overwhelmingly good in SCG, and not well spread out(he only averages more than 45 at SCG, and above 40 at only two grounds out of 5). In Viv’s case, he averages 45+ at 3 separate grounds, and below 40 at only one ground. Also Viv’s best performance in Aus was against a better attack(79-80) than Tendulkar‘s best performance in Aus(2007). I would add tho that Tendulkar performed well aginst the best ever Aus attack in 99, but not all Viv level in 79-80, which was also against a terrifyingly good attack.

I would definitely go for Viv if we include WSC performances but you make some good points over the distribution of scores.

Maybe his average doesn't warrant it but Pujara should be a shout for Australia.
Overall Pujara's stats against Australia (home and away) read:

Matches: 20
Innings: 37
Not Outs: 2
Ducks: 3
Runs: 1893
Highest Score: 204
Average: 54.08
50s: 10
100s: 5

In Australia, Pujara's stats tell us:

Matches: 11
Innings: 21
Not Outs: 0
Ducks: 2
Runs: 993
Highest Score: 193
Average: 47.28
50s: 5
100s: 3

So pretty impressive stats.

I will also add Llyod because every time he toured he had 40+ average in the series except in his first tour i.e 39 which is not bad.

Gooch>Gavaskar in WI :). Though I think Waugh is a better shout than both as he had two great tours there.

Australia - Viv
England - Dravid
WI - Waugh
NZ - Miandad
SA - Kohli
India - Younis
SL - Root. Edit: Forgot Lara. Has to be him.
Pakistan - Crowe

For a pre-1970 addition, Weekes in India. Feeble attack outside Mankad but still an iconic tour.

In India, LLoyd dominated the Indian quartet. I would pick him.

Only for players I've seen:

Australia: Clearly Tendulkar afaic. Had consistent success right from age 18 against several generations of mostly good attacks.

England : Dravid over Waugh because he did it up the order which is a much bigger challenge particularly in England. Could make arguments for both Smiths too.

India: Younis. Mainly for the Bangalore domination (with Inzi) of Kumble/Bhajji. Very memorable performance.

SL: Lara. Yeah it was one tour but probably the best series performance ever.

NZ: Close between Sanga and Dravid. Miandad put up huge numbers against Hadlee during his time too.

SA: Sachin and Kohli have good shouts for this. Will go kohli because he's got runs on some nightmare pitches there.

WI: Probably Waugh.

Pakistan/UAE: Maybe Williamson among the more recent players?

Generally tried to stick with subcontinent players for non-SC nations and vice versa.

Nice list. What about bowlers?
