Who has been South Africa's best spinner since readmission?

I'm having a bit of a "Mandela Effect" moment with the careers of Symcox and Adams, because having watched cricket since 1992 my mind always goes to Symcox when I think SA spinner, whereas Adams was a meme bowler with a funny action who I knew about but hardly recall actually watching.

Come to find Adams took 100 more test wickets than Symcox and Symcox played ZERO tests against NZ and played entirely when I was quite young. Adams played a full 4 tests in NZ when I was a teenager.

Guess it's just a case of early childhood memories sticking the strongest + my well-documented love of the JAMODI format.

Adams played that test at Hamilton with that insane crater IIRC.

Symcox I always remember seeming like an old man and a bit of a joker himself.

A bit of a side note here - and I aim this not at you but at Fiona Broome (yes, I had to look up her name) who popularised the term - but the "Mandela Effect" has always annoyed me as a fancy, pretentious and overly-specific euphemism for "being wrong."

I may or may not have had more whiskies than strictly necessary for a Monday night.

There is definitely an element of pretentiousness on my part, because the subtext is "I usually have a pretty good memory of these things which is why it seems bizarre to me that I have a totally false recollection"

Yeah, fair play and I'm much the same. I had a similar experience not so long ago when recalling a domestic 50-over match I went to at the 'Gabba when I was just a kid, and I vividly recalled Greg Chappell being clean bowled for 71. I nostalgically looked back at the scorecard and Greg Chappell did indeed make 71, but he was out caught.

My issue is, imagine that I had actually been comically pretentious enough to coin that experience "The Chappell Effect" and decided that everyone's incorrect recollection of any past event should now be defined by my specific mistake. That's why the term can **** off.

I reiterate my previous note regarding whisky consumption this evening.

Same, when I think of South African spinners my mind immediately goes back to Tony Grieg commentating on Pat Symcox bowling in the World Series. He had quite a distinctive leap in his delivery stride IIRC. Tahir probably the best overall.

There was a guy bowling leg-spin for them sometime in the early '00s. I can't remember if it was Jacques Rudolph or not, but he was really ripping them!

lol Ontong

remember when he first came along as an all-rounder that bats, bowls off-spin and bowls leg spin

turned out he was equally terrible at all of them
