Still think you need to look at getting Pant out, rather than try and tie him down. He's gonna score quickly regardless anyway.

Still here, SA still need to pick a spinner... still not nonsense. 4 fast bowlers weakening the batting because you don't want to make a choice between Olivier and Jansen, still terrible selection. Not first time this has happened, nor will it be the last no matter how many times SA has been bitten by the stupidity of it all.

A big ew actually and Pant has proven himself to be efficient under really tough circumstances unlike Afridi.

Worst comparison. Pant plays more quality innings against top class bowling in clutch situations than most legitimately world class specialist top order test batsmen.
He is inconsistent and suicide bombs an innings once in a while but you can’t take away what he has achieved in 25 tests.

there's levels to it though. Pant shows moments of stupidity in between batting fairly lucidly. Afridi's entire batting career was a never-ending stream of (hugely entertaining) red-blooded stupidity, the only variable was whether the stupid shot went for six or not.
show this innings to afridi and it might as well be astrophysics to him.

Pant would basically have to play that shot against Rabada at least 10 more times in his career before he can touch Afridi's level.

I love Afridi and think he's seriously underrated as a Test cricketer, but Pant has already accomplished more in his short career than Afridi ever did. The peak of Afridi's test batting was smashing around lackluster bowling attacks on flat pitches, mostly in Asia. Pant's already had match-winning, and in some cases series-defining, innings overseas and in tough conditions. An innings like today could have never come from Afridi.
Pant's very much comparable to Gilchrist imo. Gilly didn't make his FC debut till he was 21 and his Test debut till he was 28. Pant is only 24 and he's already got 3 Test tons and an average of 37. Don't think he'll end with a career average of 47 like Gilly did, but he could end up in close enough.
What's fascinating is how Gilly maintained a career SR of 82 in Tests. Pant, for all his madness, is only striking at 67.5!
Afridi's test SR was 86 heh. Average of 36 too, for those of you who forget. 5 100s in 27 Tests.

I think this is very optimistic. High 30s, maaaybe shade over 40 at best, which would still be great.

IDK, I think his best years are ahead of him. He's barely had a chance to downhill ski/score heavy on flat decks in his career so far, and it's natural that as he matures his output with the bat should increase. Barring any injuries/shocking loss of form I think he should end with a career average over 40. Dhoni ended up with 38 and I definitely think Pant is at least 3-4 runs better than that.
