I for one will not stand for this erasure of Can-do Sandhu and his gentle offies from the historical record
funny you should bring him up, I was close to mentioning him. Not just in the context of the mediums/offies combination but mostly in the "weird cat" context.

As exclusively predicted by yours truly, Tim Ward's inevitable rise to international cricket has begun, being named in Tasmania's 17 man squad for the Sheffield Shield.

Ok, a bit to look at here

First off no Joof is a bit of a surprise, but not a massive one, I definitely get the sense patience was wearing thin with some of his modes of dismissal at times. Has a good eye but technically he has definitely regressed a bit, can largely hide that against first grade plodders but has been unable to find a way against a better calibre of bowling. Joof can come again for sure, but the way he bats will never likely lead to consistency longterm. Brad Davis bossing the inter squad game probably swung things in his favour. I like Bobby (despite not really being a Sturt fan funnily enough), one of the better players to watch bat going around here in these parts, but knows his game well and generally is reasonibly solid. Not 100% sure how far he will go longterm but it's nice to see a grade stalwart get a go at it. Frankly I'm not optimistic/insane enough to predict significent improvement, but really this is probably about the best I could have expected. Dicey batting is nothing new, but worryingly the bowling looks a bit thin as well. No Worrall or Mennie is a big blow, although Worrall is not too far off being back ready with any luck. Chadd is Chadd, but he has a bit of a ropey knee and that will need to be managed carefully, Agar was the revelation of last season but only time will tell of he can back it up this year. Winter is solid but unlikely to run through sides when the ball doesn't move, Robins will struggle without having his bunny Nick Bertus to bowl at, and Pope hasn't been able to get it together consistently at Shield level. I would seriously contemplate playing young Liam Scott ahead of Valente in a similar sort of role. As much as like the bloke Valente has been a bit neither here nor there in his Shield career. Bit too sedate with the ball, bit too streakay and bottom hand heavy with the bat (although it does surprise me he hasn't shown a bit more with the bat at FC level, only against the white ball to date), and he has been around for a little while now. Scott just looks a bit cleaner technically with the bat, isn't lighning quick as a bowler but can get some useful bounce at times. A bit of a gamble for sure, but one I would strongly consider taking

Possible XI

Weatherald
Hunt
Ferguson
Head
Cooper
Nielsen
Scott
Sayers
Winter
Agar
Pope

Haven't seen much of Scott but he's a bit of a dasher with the bat isn't he? Wouldn't mind seeing a youngster in ahead of Valente. Not a fan of his rig or overall look at all.

Yeah, what Cribb said

Definitely rate him highly, as much as Valente has been tearing it up in grade cricket over the last couple of years I just feel Scott just has a higher ceiling as a cricketer. Wouldn't be stumned if he finds himself higher up the batting order going forward. I kinda sorta think he could already bat ahead of Nielsen but I suspect seniority will win out

Gut feel says they'll go with Valente unless they're comfortable batting Scott ahead of Nielsen. If you're batting below a keeper averaging 25 then your bowling becomes more important, and I think Valente is probably a better bowler than Scott will ever be despite his god awful First Class returns so far.

Like you I'd go with Scott either way but I don't think they will unless they're brave and bat him at 6.

For some reason I thought Nielsen averaged about 28 or somesuch, I definitely think he's a bit better than his current average suggests, but I do tend to agree with you that Valente will probably play over him

Shouldn't have let Andrews go imo

Bowling depth will be seriously tested there, there is some promise but minimal experience, if Scotty Boland was to break down they would really find themselves stretched in a major way. The more I think about, the less and less sense Tremain moving back to NSW makes from a cricketing standpoint.

Batting should be reasonably strong, good blend of youth and experience, hopefully Pucovski can have a good full season here, park the "gEt HiM iN tHe TeSt TeAm" talk for a while, just let him focus on Victoria and I think that will reap rewards for both player and team

Moises Henriques, Kurtis Patterson and Daniel Hughes are the senior batters in the squad and will be supported by youngsters Jason Sangha, Matthew Gilkes and Jack Edwards.

Poor old Nick Larkin doesn't get a mention in the batsman spiel :)
One of the great injustices of our time.
