Andre Nel vs Angus Fraser

I know Australia exports a lot of its best marbled Wagyu beef to Japan. We do have very nice beef over here in spite of that.

But then Australia produces enough food for about 80 million people and 3/4 of it is exported. And in spite of that Australian farmers are the least subsidised in the first world, outside New Zealand farmers.

The USA probably has some pretty good beef as well given their history of cattle farming.

Not sure what the percentage would be but the vast majority of that exported beef would be the grain fed Queensland Brahman cattle........and it's ****.

The Southern grass fed beef here though is generally superb.

We export the less good stuff mostly to Indonesia though.

There is a meat importer in my city that actually goes out of their way to advertise that their Aus beef is grain fed. We were trying to figure out why- its not exactly a trade secret that grass (or predominantly grass) fed tends to be better.

The only thing we could come up with is that Aus has some wide range dry lands cattle that might be worse than either typical grain or grass and they want to be clear they arent using this. Thoughts?

Those cows apparently get ridiculously fat since they give them a lot more space to eat. I don't know why they'd advertise grain fed though.

Extremely dry land grass cattle is a bit horrible if not supplemented with grain. The cows end up over walked and underfed, as well as the fact that they can get old before getting properly sized. Extremely tough meat. I doubt this happens much in Aus though. Might be a case of some importers finding the worst meat in Aus and dumping it here, which turned people off the idea of Aus grass fed.

The driest continent on the planet, a large chunk of Aus coming out of a 4 year drought........you better believe that happens here. The farmers here in Vic (that can afford to) supplement with hay feed though so the quality of beef doesn't suffer too much.

I also see grain fed beef advertised like it's supposed to be a good thing. It's really not......feel so sorry for our Queensland members, would never touch a steak up there again.

10/10 Slippy thread this too btw.
