It's a little strange that both CdG and Mitchell are ahead of him, tbf. It's not like he came back into the ODI team and put out middling results. He's averaged 44 with the bat (SR of 107) and 19 with the ball since his comeback. He then followed that up in the Super Smash and did similarly well. It's not like we are the best team in the world with amazing depth, this a number 6 ranked side that's been hit by injuries. And he can't make a squad of 14-15?
From the team announcement:

“We see both Daryl and Jimmy as important all-rounders in the T20 format. With a travelling squad of just 13 and the need to balance the options for the series, Daryl gets this opportunity against India as a reward for his consistent form for the BLACKCAPS.”

Neesham was selected for NZ A, but from the quote above it appears that he will get some Black Caps white ball action before the World T20.

CdG is being picked as a specialist batsman in T20I so not competing for a spot with Neesham.

Only possible saving grace would be if the selectors think he's the number 1 allrounder and are trying to work out which of the other three is next best.

However if it is due to his persona i.e. because their little conservative worlds won't accept someone like that, then that would be dire.

oh yeah nah I'd have him in my team, I'm just doing that thing I do where I ignore real-life context and take a big picture view to make a general/theoretical statement with no actual purpose.

Just saying, the narrative that Neesham was dumped isn't really true because he was never a core member of the T20I side and hasn't done particularly well in T20Is. Nevertheless he is obvs worth persisting with given recent form.

Nesshams casting aside due personality is something i alwsys have and will continue to bring up while we're losing and kuggs is in the team

I want McClenaghan back in around the setup. He has said he is available for NZ T20 selection but is now constantly overlooked (because I assume he went T20 franchise hunting) but the guy is clutch and should be in the squad for mine.

Has McClenaghan done anything in the Super Smash this season?

Wasn't even aware last night's game was on tbh. The extent to which the NZC is treating this series as a fact-finding mission for the T20 WC leaves me with precisely 0 ****s to give.

Mitch has been complaining on twitter about how McEwan and Lister aren't part of the NZ A squad because they have much better stats than those selected

In our 2016 T20 WC squad we had Boult, Southee etc and McClenaghan and Milne were the first choice pacers. While Mitch got tonked for the Sydney Thunder last BBL I still think he's a very clever bowler and I wanna find that interview with BMac where he basically said Mitch puts in the most work of any bowler to figure out how to get a batsman out. Bennett basically does the same role though so I'm not too disheartened if they stick with Bennett.

Crazy to think that after this series we play another 18 T20Is this year before the WC.

One day squad announced, nothing drastic. Worker, Ruds or Chappy's recent form not taken into consideration. We can't call it a surprise but the only wild card addition is Hamish Bennett. Great to see him named in the squad.

BLACKCAPS ODI squad
Kane Williamson (Northern Districts) (c)
Hamish Bennett (Wellington Firebirds)
Tom Blundell (Wellington Firebirds)
Colin de Grandhomme (Northern Districts)
Martin Guptill (Auckland Aces)
Kyle Jamieson (Auckland Aces)
Scott Kuggeleijn (Northern Districts)
Tom Latham (Canterbury) (wk)
Jimmy Neesham (Wellington Firebirds)
Henry Nicholls (Canterbury)
Mitchell Santner (Northern Districts)
Ish Sodhi (Northern Districts) (1st ODI)
Tim Southee (Northern Districts)
Ross Taylor (Central Stags)

Oh and Munro dropped, rightly so. Munro shouldn't worry much about this, just gives him a chance to play leagues around the world and earn bit more than what he does right now. He'll keep the spot in the T20s no doubt and should do. Although he's looked out of touch, he'll be all right in the T20 format.

No Todd Astle either, I thought he may be pulled up for one day but nope.

And looks like Jamieson will make his ODI debut as expected. Will Nicholls open with Guptill or will Blundell get that role?

It's quite simple, do they have a chance to play for NZ? McEwan probably starts at 120k and by the time it's tea he'll bowl at 100k. Ben Lister not bad, he swing the ball nicely and a left hander but again 120 ticks. This is exactly how the Wellington club bowlers want to play for Firebirds bowling at 100-110 k but have good numbers to show. If either named by Mitch have any chance of playing for NZ then no worries but they don't particularly now with so many guys that can bowl at 140. Ed Nutall is quite sharp, he's more of a 130+ bowler so is Michael Rae. Duffy has always been good enough, should have played for NZ A before.

Not Terrible
India A wouldn't have gotten to a 100 today if Might Matt had been bowling.
I never understand the reluctance of the selectors to give someone like McEwan games at home. Yes he is a military medium machine that takes wickets by extracting as much as he can from New Zealand conditions. Theres a fair chance that he'd get absolutely hammered in the subcontinent or Australia, but come on. We play slightly more than half our cricket in NZ/Eng/SA. Give the bloke a chance at a higher level FFS

Not to mention that Lord Colin's enduring success in inhospitable conditions (and McEwan is undoubtedly a better bowler than Colin) should've opened the selectors eyes to the value that medium pace swing can have when its allied to the accuracy of a bowling machine.
