DoG's Top 100 Test Batsmen Countdown Thread

To be honest, some of Crowe’s high scores were made against poor attacks or in good batting conditions. I’m thinking specifically of the 299 and the 180-odd at the Gabba in 1985.

Allan Border averaged only 39 against WI though he averaged 53 against them away from home. Will be interesting to see where he is placed.

An average of 39 vs the wi teams that he faced is pretty decent afaic.
Yes pretty decent absolutely. Might be a bit below par on the quality points though in this regard. Having said that, he made it up with a great overseas record. Averages 56 !

I can understand Crowe being this low. But I can't understand ----ing Samaraweera being higher than him.

Interesting that Crowe's adjusted average ends up lower than his actual one. The idea of him being underranked comes from him being fairly outstanding for his era.

Compare his level of adustment to Samarweera, who had (by impression) easy home and away pitches, and poor opposition bowlers by both era and typical opponents. Yes, Sama gets knocked down more. But not to the degree I would have expected.

Interesting to see who'd be no 2

Sobers, Tendulkar, Marnus all have decent shots
