Is Ben Stokes the best cricketer ever in the whole world?

I was just thinking how in a space of a month Stokes could have been on the wrong end of perhaps two very important moments in his career if not for some considerable luck going his way. Would have been heartbraking. Cricket can be a cruel mistress but for Stokes it wasn't.

He's certainly come a long way after bottling it in the WT20 final, in fact it may have even made him into the player he is today

since stokes has lost his radar a bit cdg is the best 5th bowler in the world, and it was close before that despite stokes clearly having more bowling talent.

cdg is extremely good if you judge a bowler by more than 'right arm medium'. can be used as a genuine opening bowler and to provide control when nothing is happening.
When did Stokes "lose his radar"?

He's oscillated between rubbish and good with the ball this series tbh. Served up some pies in the first test especially and in the first innings at headingley.
That's not particularly due to him having lost his radar any more than usual, mind - he can bowl devestating wicket taking spells, long workhorse dry-ish spells, or completely filthy spells and you never know which he's going to come out with when you give him the ball

Yeah but what matters is that he's capable of doing insane things like reverse sweeping Nathan Lyon for 6 on day 4 with the Ashes on the line and bowl some jaffas. He's not supposed to be James Anderson. X factor matters most with balanced all rounders? He does awesome things not infrequently. The brain fades and pies come with it, like the shite handling of a Countach. You can't expect him to be a Prius.

Yeah, it's incredible to watch on the highlights real, but I can't help but think it's a really ****ing dumb shot to play when he was middling his orthodox shots so beautifully. I don't see any reason why he should look to play it besides "Ah **** it, we'll probably lose anyway so lets have some fun."
Nah it does make some sense on purely cricketing logic grounds. Lyon was really trying to bowl fast and wide as possible to take the slog sweep out of play, with the added benefit of significant spin out of the rough that would make the lofted shot down the ground that much more dangerous as well - so easy in that case to skew one to long-on or deep cover in those circumstances. But that line becomes perfect for a right-handed batsman playing the slog sweep, and you're hitting with the turn too. Takes an insane amount of skill and gumption to pull off, of course, but the benefit is that it makes the orthodox shots that much less risky because it forces Lyon to reconsider his line.

3 massive bits of luck in the last month or so

Caught on the boundary, but foot on the rope

Deflected 4 runs off the bat

Atrocious umpiring decision with new reviews in the bank for Aus

I don't know about "atrocious" decision. Was definitely an incredibly lucky innings though.

Just goes to show that no matter how box office you are, the end result is seldom guaranteed.

see os post, and i see you've moved the goalposts so i'll take that as a concession cdg is a good bowler please and thank you
Well if CDG is a good bowler, how is he averaging 10 more than a bowler who has apparently lost his radar recently?
