England have lost the right for the word "freak" to be used for their lower order partnerships.

Shocking stats those, Bairstow in for him and keep Leach as a specialist for me especially as Woakes should be back for home tests giving us ridiculous batting depth.

Good 50 from Foakes, pushed us on to a solid score.

Probably done for the day now?
My line up for home tests;

Burns
Bairstow
Stokes
Root
Buttler
Foakes
Moeen
Curran/Woakes
Broad/Woakes
Rashid/Leach
Anderson

JYB likes responsibility so I say we give him the chance of opening, we're now trying Stokes at 3, which I'm a fan off as I think long term his batting is probably his stronger suit, plus it allows Root to be at 4, Buttler has been doing great and is selected as a Batsman so 5 it is, I think Foakes is a better bat than Moeen, so Foakes 6, Mo 7, plus Mo's best stats come from batting 7. Then we have the real headache of who to pick out of Curran, Broad, Woakes, Rashid and Leach to acompany Anderson in the bowling attack, Curran and Woakes both has hax tail wagging ability, and Woakes can be pretty beastly at home bowling, Curran offers left arm variation, and then Broad has his career to back him up plus he's Jimmy's partner in crime. Then both Rashid and Leach offer variation to Moeen, Leach is the better bowler, but Rashid has hax tail wagging ability (but not like how Curran and Woakes does).

Stokes hardly looking promising at 3 (even if he's only actually batted once there), already showing why he too isn't really a long term solution imo. 3 elementary errors so far in his dismissals so far in the series. 2 woeful attempts early in his innings at little lap sweeps where he's just missed basically straight balls and being bowled and lbw. The dismissal in the second innings of the first test was bad too- Bowled by an offie bowling over the wicket to the left handed stokes - shouldn't really happen to a good batsman especially when they are 60*.

I'd seen some mention Kallis as if Stokes could mould himself into a number 3 bat/allrounder (obviously on a lesser scale) but they are completely different batsman. Kallis was a ruthless and methodical accumulator with the bat. Stokes at least at the start of his career was the antithesis of that. He's never put together prolonged heavy runscoring spells. Kallis also spent much more time at 4 than 3.

Even when he's grinding it out and he's batted a decent amount of time he is still liable to either make an elementary batting mistake (see first test) or just lose the mental ability to keep grinding - Auckland March 2018 being a prime example - trying to bat out last day for a draw he bats really well and makes 66 off 188 but the last 30 minutes or so before he got out he just started playing stupidly aggressive shots.

He simply won't score the weight of runs to warrant batting at 3 long term. Obv in the short term they have no-one to bat at 3 and someone has to do it and especially against Aus at home where pace is dominant it may not be the worst solution. But it's the same as Bairstow, Pope, Ali. They get moved up the order to the detriment of their overall game. It might be Buttler, Foakes, Sam Curran or Woakes next. **** knows how they are going to sort it. I think I've come around to the thinking that they'll have to try Bairstow at 1,2 or 3 in the near future. Jennings looks as rough against pace as ever.

Just insert a genuine tailender like Anderson, Broad or Leach in to open. Jennings at 3. Problem solved.

This Sri Lankan batting is like a brick wall with no mortar except for at the base in the form of Karunaratne.

SL just need to clutch this chase like the 3rd test back in the WI tour, these two probably need to put on another 70 at least to give us a decent chance though, the tail will fight and Roshen has found some form, but Dickwella might just not turn up

It's anyone's guess who the runs are coming from, but this England team have been posting some pretty consistent scores. Not going full meltdown in tricky conditions seems highly optimistic.

Anyway, the one thing that is predictable is a post explaining why the new number 3 won't hack it, and then the switch to the next inevitable failure will give the same material
