No Smith? Are you mental?

I don't like him, but my god his numbers...

How about 35 and over and/or retired versus current and under 35?

(For example Cook has announced his retirement at 33 so is in the older/retireed team as is AB (34), while Philander and Azhar Ali are still playing at 33 so are in the younger team. Likewise older current players such as Anderson (36) and Herath (40) are in the older team. Confused? So am I!

Anyway which team is stronger?

Older/Retired team (aged of current players in brackets)

Cook
Amla (aged 35)
Sanga
Kallis
Younis
Chanderpaul/Voges
AB (wk)
Johnson
Steyn (35)
Herath (40)
Anderson (36)

Younger and current team

Warner (31)
Azhar (31)
Williamson (28)
Smith (29)
Kohli (29)
Shakib (31)
Watling (33) (wk)
Ashwin (31)
Philander (33)
Cummins (25)
Rabada (23)

Extremely strong tail!

Based on numbers for each position and no Smith? He obviously owns number 4 and he’d go close to 3 as well

1. Williamson *
2. Amla
3. Steven Smith
4. Kohli
5. De Villiers
6. Sangakkara
7. Watling +
8. Ashwin/Philander (pitch dependant)
9. Steyn
10. Rabada
11. Anderson

As I said "best performed in each position".

Sanga made double the runs of Smith at #3 at essentially the same average.

Once again, Kohli has almost double the runs of Smith at #4.

Obviously I'd include Smith if I wasnt factoring in batting positions.

But then Sir Colin only played 27 tests. Took 125 wickets so very similar wpm yo Rabada; almost 5 per test.
But that's my point. Rabada feels like a fresh new young face on the scene but entire careers have passed by with less test/ wickets than he's taken.

Indeed. Dave Gilbert and Chris Matthews are two such examples.

Smithy’s sample sizes for each position 3-4-5 aren’t so small they should be discounted. He averages above the others in each position. I think o understand your reasoning, runs per position, but particularly at 4 I think Smith gets in

Then shouldn't Smith be in your team twice at no. 3 and no.4 rather than not at all . . .

Vs a team of the 90s just for shyts and giggles:

Saeed
Kirsten
Lara
Sachin
Waugh S*
Inzi
Healy+
Wasim
Warne
Ambrose
Donald

Players like McGrath, Dravid etc I think of more of as players of the 00s and they dont get to play for two teams. Speaking of which, a team of the 00s:

Smith*
Hayden
Ponting
Dravid
Kallis
Chanderpaul??
Gilchrist +
Pollock
Shoaib
Murali
Mcgrath

Slater and Gooch both scored more runs at a higher average than your two 90s openers.

Also, de Silva over Inzi.

Hard to argue with your other picks assuming Steyn can't be picked for the 00s team since he's playing for the 10s team.
