Surprised at that - expected Smith to grind us into the dirt
I'd say 20-odd overs under lights against a team who will be mentally out of it has its advantages. I'll reckon England have a good chance of ending at least three down, two of which would be given away. Personally I'm sceptical of the real advantage of bowling under lights but the psychological effect will be well at play.

tbf if they're exclusively going to bowl short at the tail, would you want to run the (relatively small) risk of a Lyon/Haze injury for the sake of a few extra runs in the first dig?

If they're not fast enough to cause any threat why should it matter?

I can’t remember who it was now, may have been Boycott, but an ex-England player made this point during the last Ashes in England. Extended it to essentially suggest that England should never let Anderson bat because he might get injured; always declare 9 down.

You can’t do that if you’re 9/80 chasing 450

I would like nothing more than for this declaration to backfire massively on Smith's dumb, derpy face with England scoring 650 and winning the test. Alas it's not very likely.
