Best Team 1970 to 1990

Sunil Gavaskar
Barry Richards
Vivian Richards
Graeme Pollock
Greg Chappell
Mike Procter
Imran Khan (C)
Alan Knott
Malcolm Marshall
Dennis Lillee
Bishan Bedi

12th Man
Richard Hadlee

Best Team 1990 to 2010

Mathew Hayden
Virendra Sehwag
*Rahul Dravid/ Ricky Ponting
Sachin Tendulkar
Brian Lara
Jack Kallis
Adam Gilchrist
Wasim Akram
Shane Warne
Curtly Ambrose
Glenn McGrath

12th Man
Muttiah Muralitharan

Criteria for selection is nothing else but the fact that a player has to play a significant amount of cricket in that period, for example, selecting Garry Sobers was tempting option but he mostly belongs to the 60's, though played till 1974.

* that Dravid/ Ponting choice was toughest for me, though here and elsewhere Ponting would be rated higher I know, but if one observes their careers, there is absolutely nothing to choose from (in fact I have never seen two careers that are so similar) Ponting has significantly better strike rate (and probably that is the main reason why most would pick him ahead of Dravid) and Dravid has a significantly better overall record...who will I select in that final XI, would depend on where we are playing, if the match is going to be played in Australia, South Africa or Sri Lanka, it is Ponting, and if we are playing in India, Pakistan or England, surely Dravid. As far as West Indies and New Zealand are concerned both had marvelous performances, Dravid averages 65 in West Indies and 63 in New Zealand while Ponting's averages are 61 and 60 respectively...so basically no choices there...

anyway, for me, the older side looks slightly stronger, what do you think? Any changes?

State Vice-Captain
Team 70-90
1. Alan Border for Mike Procter.
2. 12th man, I would vie for Abdul Qadir (need 2 good spinners for helpful tracks)

Team 90-2010
1. Never have ' / ' in your team. Make a decision and stick with it.
2. I'd take Ponting over Dravid mainly for his attacking mindset
3. S.Waugh over J.Kallis, and make him captain. (as tough as it is to leave JK out)

Always look for leadership players. Team 70's have it in Viv, G.Chappell, Imran and to be included A.Border
Team 90's have few if any leadership players (Wasim ?). Hence add, Ponting and S.Waugh.

Quite noticeable, that there is no place for Botham

For the 1970s team, I am ok with Barry Richards, but would prefer Gordon Greenidge as he had a full career behind him and Barry only played 4 tests.

Would prefer Allan Border over Proctor.

Actually, I think its worth removing no.6 specialist bat altogether and have Imran at no.6 and make way for Hadlee in the bowling.

I would put Derek Underwood over Bedi.

A dream bowling attach of Imran/Lillee/Marshall/Hadlee and Underwood for 4th innings wickets would overwhelm any batting lineup I think, I give this team the edge.

For 90s - 2000s, I think Graeme Smith is a more solid bat than Sehwag, who would be taken apart by the opposite bowling. The rest of the lineup is ok.

No reason to leave Kallis out. The importance of a decent 5th bowling option against a strong batting lineup cannot be overstated.

Man to man

Gavaskar>Hayden
Boycott <= Smith
Viv>= Ponting
Sachin>=Chappell
Lara>Border
Miandad <= Kallis . Kallis clearly better cricketer
Knott <<Gilchrist . Wkt keeping+batting
Imran>Wasim
Hadlee=Warne. Hadlee better cricketer
Marshall >Ambrose
Underwood <Mcgrath

Overall, very very close between both teams but the 90s team has a more balanced bowling lineup imo. There isn't much to chose between the batting lineups except that the 90s team has Gilchrist and for that id give them the overall edge.

You could go both Greenidge and Barry Richards, opening à la Hampshire. It is probably not in the spirit of the enterprise but I'd probably take the West Indies c.1984 and simply chuck Greg Chappell in there - maybe Knott for Dujon also.

Well, the inclusion of the South Africans for the older set was not much based on their test match records

I would not prefer Border over Procter but I like your other point of having Imran at 6 and Hadlee at 7, that makes it almost an impossible bowling line up, forget about decades, it looks as good as any

Can't choose between Bedi and Underwood really, guess it would depend mostly on the surface

Sehwag provides that right-left option, if one doesn't have any preference about that, Smith is of course a good choice

The more modern team would win - Kallis as 5th bowler, Gilchrist's batting (and strike rate) and Warne's legspin. Otherwise the 70s/80s has a better top 3 and a marginally better pace attack.

Sobers' bowling average was actually lower in the 1970s (31.50) than 1954 - 1969 (34.59) and his batting average was still a mighty 52.33, only inferior to his average in his pomp by 6.59. He took 18% of his wickets and scored 15% of his runs in his third decade. One for all ages I feel.

Lillee, Marshall and Imran would tear Hayden to pieces.

Try walking down the pitch to them, you faux bully.

Now we'll have ten pages of 'is Matt Hayden a flat track bully' stuff. Well done Redhill as always

It is true that Hayden’s effectiveness varied more than most players on his level. Fair comment.

I would also play both Warne and Murali, since the 70s/80s side would be much more comfortable against pace given the bowling at the time.

No, you need Imran there, he was the player of the 80s...
