Tbf it was a brute of a delivery, very little Westley could have done with that! Just hope it isn't another finger break for an Ashes hopeful!

250 looking optimistic now. But yea they really should win. However if Middlesex get more bonus points than Somerset then Middlesex will finish higher. The new rules should prevent Middlesex from declaring their innings and depriving Somerset that way. But then again they're a London tosser county with Strauss covering them, so who knows...

Rumours of Will Gidman returning to Durham.

I can understand Durham's perspective but can understand Onions's also. Onions wanted two years rather than the one year rolling contract being offered then to retire upon a coaching role; he has a lot of skills to teach the bowlers and probably thinks his 14 years legendary service should be rewarded. From Durham's perspective, Onions has been knackered for most of 2017 - not a good motive to award longer contracts - and already has a bowling coach (Alan Walker).

It is hard to see a compromise being reached. Perhaps Durham should have given him the two years for his service, and offered his an assistant role to Walker or Killer with the Seconds? I lean a little more to Onions here but still see Durham's perspective.

Middlesex unhappy with pitch as Somerset strike back in basement battle

Somerset’s relegation battle with Middlesex is shaping up to be the most acrimonious conflict the West of England has seen since the Battle of Sedgemoor in the Monmouth Rebellion.

Middlesex, last year’s champions but likely to be relegated if they are beaten by Somerset, have made no public statement but are furious that Taunton’s pitch has favoured the home spinners so much. After Somerset had been dismissed for 236, their left-arm spinner Jack Leach opened the bowling and took two wickets for three runs in seven overs to put the home side on top.

County cricket has the equivalent of a Match Referee in the ECB Cricket Liaison Officer - in this case Wayne Noon, a former Northants and Notts wicketkeeper. “I’m going to sleep on it,” said Noon at the close of day one, “and I’ll do this (talk to the media) tomorrow if you want. I’ve had a hot line all day, as you can imagine.

Context makes this conflict even more heated. Somerset missed out on their first ever championship last year because Middlesex made Yorkshire commit to chasing a target of 240 off 40 overs right until the end, even when there was no chance of winning, instead of blocking out for a draw that would have given Somerset the title.

The impartial view has to be that the pitch - used for Somerset’s last home game - turned lavishly but not, so far, too excessively. If Ravi Patel, Middlesex’s left-arm spinner, who took career-best figures of seven for 81, had not taken a championship wicket all season, that says much about modern county cricket - and the fact that Middlesex usually only play one spinner, Ollie Rayner, who was out with an intercostal injury. Patel has represented England Lions, and he bowled tidily, a touch slower than Leach; he rated the pitch “good, for me, as a spinner.”

This turn, however, while lavish, was not unpredictable. The ball did not shoot, and while it sometimes gripped and bounced, it did not kick or spit from nowhere. Evidence for this was the astonishing innovation by Marcus Trescothick who fielded at second slip, for some of the spinners, on his knees. He said he had tried it in the nets and the game against Lancashire, having checked it did not contravene the Laws, and found he could field closer and catch balls that would not have otherwise carried.

When Noon decides whether Somerset should be deducted points or not - which is likely to be the difference between their being relegated or staying up - he will have to take into account the lamentable standard of numerous batsmen. Nobody played back, using the depth of the crease, as contemporary Asian batsmen - or bygone English batsmen, brought up on uncovered pitches - would have done. Nobody patiently worked the ball into gaps left by deep fielders.

Four of Somerset’s batsmen fell to sweeps, and two to reverse-sweeps, notably James Hildreth who sparked Somerset’s collapse by pre-determining a reverse-sweep at a straight half-volley. Next ball Roelof van der Merwe rushed down the pitch, pushed forward and edged to slip. To survive Somerset have to get more or as many bonus points as Middlesex in this game, then win it, and it would not have taken much gumption to score 300.

Middlesex collapsed to five for three. Nick Compton edged a tentative push, while Sam Robson and Steve Eskinazi lunged forward at Leach and were caught by Trescothick standing upright, before he went down on his knees, much as the Duke of Monmouth did, albeit for a different reason.

It's a pitch that turns from day one, so what ? By the sounds of things it's not up and down and impossible to survive on if you have a decent technique against spin. We can't complain about how alien conditions are when we go to India if there's a chance a club will get punished for creating a pitch that has plenty of turn in it! Somerset have prepared a pitch that plays to their strengths and enjoyed the luck of winning the toss, so good luck to them!

Yeah you got to applaud Somerset to try and vary conditions. Can only benefit the English game.

But I suppose there does need to be a balancing act. So you just got to hope the people who the ECB employ know what they are doing.

I don't think there's anything wrong with producing a pitch that turns though, providing it's not going through the top every other ball or a ball an over is shooting through ankle high. They've essentially seen a perceived weakness in the depth of Middlesex's spin attack, backed there own batsmen to succeed in difficult conditions against spin and put the pressure on there own spinners, Bess, Leach and van der Merwe to win them the game.

I agree that there needs to be a bit of a balance, you don't really want to see part-time spinners that roll it coming on and ripping it square to be fair.

He is a proper specialist opener. I could never envision him at three (I said when people had him for three with England). He used to tie down an end while Stoneman scored. He then had that remarkable season in 2016. He started 2017 brightly then his form collapsed; he is struggling to make double figures now.

Good bowler. He has been a much better wicket taker for Durham than a batsman this season - important wickets also. He is one of those where he is more than a part-timer but not quite an all-rounder.
