Notts losing this game makes the last round really interesting. Northants would be 13 points behind Notts and 19 behind Worcestershire.

Notts are struggling to get over the line right now and short on players. Lumb, Greg Smith and Brendan Taylor all retired or returned to their country in the last two months. Hales with odi side. Wouldn't surprise me if Pujara has to return to india after this game.

Footitt injured to the end of the season. Broad rested for rest of season. Ball with the England ODI side for rest of season. Fletcher out for season.

Northants themselves are in the wars. Duckett and Wakely being at hospital today with possible broken finger and nose. Gleeson didn't bowl first innings so possibly injured too. They play leicestershire last.

Could yet be some salvation for Durham with Jennings - although chances are he'll go somewhere else.
Notts are in danger of fluffing their lines. Been a long season with the limited overs success, retirements, injuries etc And in truth the academy is poor (Patel, Ball, Fletcher, Footitt, 'Hales' a side - recent times nothing & they even let Notts lads come through at Leics academy in Broad & Gurney) - recent vintage like Libby, Moores, Hutton, Wood aren't great).

13 point gap over Northants with 1 game to go. Need to do it for Chris Read.

Hmm don't mess this up Yorkshi*e. Would rather like it if Somerset won next week and one of the London tosser clubs went down instead. Would absolutely love it if that was Hampscum.

And Yorkshire win. Hampshire 16/4 chasing 185, losing would put them in the mix if they can't beat Warwickshire in the last round.

Somerset scraping a draw would help them keep things in their hands - seems unlikely at this point, although as long as they don't lose on the bonus points v Middlesex a win there would leapfrog them over Middlesex.

Or not, as it turns out. Well, they did have a sniff, but not enough of one. Somerset weren't good enough to even make it close.

How are Coverton's figures this year? One of our regulars bigs him up from time to time, but I've managed to miss the occasions when he's lived up to it.

It's interesting to see the roads counties take in order to achieve success and on way is poaching players from other clubs, which has been highlighted by Sir Ian in the past week and I do feel for counties, in this recent case Durham, that have either their better players poached in Stoneman, Borthwick, now potentially Jennings, or clubs lose their promising players as they search accelerated development and enhanced salaries at the so-called bigger counties.

As Essex complete yet another remarkable win from nowhere, looking at their dynamics, in terms of playing squad, it is surely close to an ideal template for clubs that can combine shrewd recruits with young homegrown players and indeed experienced players that all have the clubs best interests at heart and through this build a work ethic and belief on the pitch that allows them such victories from some desperate situations. The value of a strong club scene and academy, and some patience and long-term planning from the club.

Recent signings in Varun Chopra and Adam Wheater are both local boys and former Essex players whose club values are already instilled in them. Sam Cook the latest hero today has been a real find, while Jamie Porter has been fantastic all year long, Simon Harmer has surely proved a Kolpak signing that has excelled beyond all expectations and over seas players Mo Amir and Neil Wagner have both contributed to winning Essex games. Nick Browne, Tom Westley, Daniel Lawrence, have all played their part alongside the more experienced ten Doeschate, Bopara and Cook when he's been available. Oh, and there's also a pretty useful local gloveman in there too!

When it's been plain sailing Essex have piled up first innings runs, resulting in aiming to bowl the opposition out on the final day on a wearing pitch with Harmer causing countless issues and Porter nipping the ball about in a relentless fashion constantly at the incoming batsmen. When Essex have been behind the 8-ball, someone has stood up with a match saving innings or a spell of bowling to somehow drag them back into the game.

Unfair surrey is playing sanga, single handedly propped them at the top of the table, will be at the bottom of the barrel next season without sanga

I'd love Notts to be nicked to the promotion spot by Northants, and Hants to be relegated. Warks and Sussex would have to win against those teams and I believe Somerset would have to beat Middlesex and Northants Leicestershire

Good start from Somerset, would think their pitch is a bunsen, Middlesex have a few who can roll their arm over but just the one proper spin bowler. Seems quite difficult to envisage a scenario where Hampscum go down unfortunately, they'd have to lose as well pretty much.

Taunton's the last place you want a bad back as a spinner like Ollie Rayner has. Somerset in a great position to win this game already batting first and with the better spinners. Selectors should be at the game comparing Finn and COverton. Finn's first spell was pretty average.

Westley just got bounced out by Steve Patterson . lol. Although tbf it seemed to be the wicket at fault as the ball reared quickly from back of a length. Got rapped on the finger/thumb so maybe another broken digit.

The Zimbabwe forums reckon that they must do everything to get Kyle Jarvis back too. They know Sean Ervine won't happen. But they reckon they could persuade young Ed Byrom who is making his way at Somerset & just got 56.

*should* being the operative word. If it's not on Sky then they don't watch it.

No Tom Helm for Middlesex. A guy who Andy Flower is pushing really hard and will most likely be in the shadow squad in Australia.

“Tom’s hardly played any cricket, but he could be anything.”
Andy Flower has high hopes for Middlesex and England Lions paceman Tom Helm, one of our 10 to watch for 2017

Somerset are winning this game against Middlesex (unless it rains). Should save Somerset. Wicket turning quite a lot. Even if they collapse to 250 they should still win with Leach and Bess. ****ing Stirling sweating tons having bowled a few overs.
