Yeah well, as you say it's his first FC game in forever, and he's also had a lot of ODI and T20 cricket in the interim. Will probably take a bit of time to readjust back to FC bowling (not that Cummins had any problems).

Ajaz Patel really does have very decent stats for a plunket finger spinner.
we need a poll on whether ajaz patel will ever play test cricket

sadly I think it will happen
Amazingly effective for someone who barely turns the ball. If he could bat I think there'd be a risk he could get a funky selection for NZ, but as it is, nah.

Would be an ATG heist if Wellington take this. Two wickets needed off the last over for them to win! Or CD need 12 runs. They were 150/3 a short time ago!

Ended 9 wickets down and 9 runs from the win. Despite ending in a draw it must have been a great finish to see.

Interesting article on the two SA coaches working with the Otago team.

To those looking for opportunity, Walter has a few warnings about the perception that the pathway is easier in New Zealand. "The current cricket set-up in SA is really strong. Corrie [van Zyl] is doing a great job with the structures and processes in place, and the playing opportunities that are available to players now. If you look at the SA A side program, it's immense.

"There was hardly any New Zealand A cricket this last year, and there is no official competition barring a week's competition for the level below franchise cricket, so there's no B side cricket, as we would say in South Africa. That's the biggest standout difference. As much as there is often a complaint about playing opportunities in South Africa, there is much more than there is maybe here."

Roux said that it is "quite tough for the guys on the fringe of the franchise team to stay motivated and involved", which has presented him and Walter with another hurdle. "We have to set up our programme to work around that, and also bring to the foreground to the guys who work in administration here that we need a bit of action in that second tier," Roux.

Without the development of a second tier, the gulf between franchise players the rest will continue to grow. "We only contract 15 players but in a season we will use around 19, and you see the biggest difference there," Walter said. "Because they don't get to play a lot, you can see the difference in the quality. The depth is not as good as it in South Africa. It's our biggest focus to create opportunities for those guys."

Yes, well I'm in full agreement about the glaring holes in our structure.

But I think he missed one; our national u19 program is apalling and just reliant on the ICC tournament, and any other bones we may get that cost us almost nothing.

It is re-hashing earlier discussion, probably on this thread:
- No NZA
- no provincial red ball A cricket.
- no NZ u19 tests.
- bare bones NZ u19 ODIs

It would be really, really interesting to compare the financing structure of NZC with CSA. Because the saffas have all of that. How on earth do they afford it?

I know SAF have a population of 40m, but I tend to think of the rugby and cricket populations and economies as fairly similar to NZ as the black population aren't very engaged.

Was listening to the Howie Games podcast with Baz. Interesting thing was when they were talking about IPL retained earnings. From memory IPL owners give out about 21% of profits in player wages, and he compared how the NZC agreement was 29% and CA was 28%.

I think the world has changed a lot since the early 2000s when we almost had the player strike and this deal was set up. This is a t20 world now. Plus in 2002 the Indian tv market was still just emerging. NZCs earnings must have exploded. They now pay 6x15 provincial players who use to be amateurs. So NZC have vastly increased the pool of players who they pay. But the elite level of 20 centrally contracted players are still getting 29%, but 29% of shitload more than 2002.

Plus. About 3/4s of NZs 20 contracted players can supplement or double their income in the t20 era. In windows that NZC carefully avoid.

I think we can take a few % from the central contracts and put that into the glaring holes mentioned above.

Don't know when the next contracts negotiations is due. But I think we can rest assured nothing will happen to rock any boats. Even though there are no Flemings, Vettori, or McCullums about anymore to exert much player power. I'd really struggle to see any industrial action occurring. Life is sweet. Just don't be as ham fisted as the WICB, just take a little bit. Can't fill all 4 of those holes without industrial action, but could fill 1 or 2.

Yeah the unfortunate timezone is often cited here, I know that. South Africa plays at a far more ideal time for an Asian audience, even British winter viewers.

The lack of NZ A cricket is another indictment on NZC and the appalling way it is run. Get ready all, for the selectorial approach going forward to be the 'throw them to the wolves and hope they aren't completely eaten' (read G.Phillips this season) over nurtured and put under the microscope for further proof of readiness at NZ A/even U19s level.

Good question . Here are a few more . When did NZ A actually last play a game ? When is the next A fixture/ tour? Is there a current NZ A Squad/ NZ Development Squad? If yes , which Domestic players are in it ? Nothing on the NZC website ?

Yes. Almost all cricket from SAF I have watched was when I lived in the uk. Good Timezone for the bigger markets.

Still. It would be good to see an investigative comparison.

Because SAF are by far the biggest over achievers in world cricket, there is no mystery to them (eg slingers and mystery spinners who have escaped the official coaching pathways).

NZC should be trying to copy as much as possible. And the glaring holes are obvious here, and they are filled over there.

This isn't bricks and mortar hocus pocus like the cricket academy we felt we needed to copy from Australia 20 years ago.

Nuttal back for Canterbury this round, which is awesome

Still no Jamieson yet in second half of Plunket. Which is a bit sad. He retuned for last round of FT, but nothing since.

Brett Randell has FC debut for ND.

Last NZA series was home v SLA in Nov 2015. This got Nicholls promoted.

No future plans.

The last away A test we played was in late 2013. This tour got Anderson and Sodhi elevated immediately, plus Latham, Henry, Milne, Neesham toured.

In the last 4 years, and counting , no promising NZ player has been tested or trialled in red ball cricket in overseas conditions.

There beeen some listA tournaments they have been to in 2014.

No Rance. That might actually leave some wickets on the table for Milne to get. If Ajaz doesn't pick up 7 or so.

And keeping on wth the discussion above. The NZ U19s have not played a test since 2008.

The NZ U19s have played 4 games outside of the U19 World Cup in the last 4 years.

Milne gets a wicket, genuine yay from me.

If Milne still come out of this injury break as a 150k Gavin Larsen. Then I will be genuinely disappointed.

But they have a SAF coach at CD, so hopes are high that people might actually be doing their jobs and someone has discovered the 4 year old footage in the vault of him swinging it, and are working it.

Yeah this is a good point. For a while a few years ago people on this forum and plenty of others elsewhere were complaining at the lack of A tours, and then the last I really thought about it this had been remedied with the tour to India, matches against Sri Lanka and some Emerging Players matches.

But yes, it's now been more than a year with nothing at all on this front. As (imo) this is a very important development pathway I think we're really limiting the progression of players through to the international side.

Do they lack the budget? Was it someone no longer with them that pushed for these matches (e.g. Edgar)? Or do they just lack the insight and will? It has quite a 'bad old days' feel that I thought we'd moved past.
