***Official*** New Zealand Domestic Season 2016/17

So that's 2 tons, 22 fifties at FC level for Will Young. Incredible. Looking on track to smash Fleming's 9 and 46 at Test level.

And I worry about Matt Henry. Absolute talent with the bat, batting at 9 for Canterbury and playing like a tail ender every time I see him. Actually doing a sub-par Tim Southee impression at the crease. I get the feeling he's going to get a lot less chances for NZ at Test level if he doesn't realise they're not going to pick him - or at least less likely to - while he's playing that way.

It's his bowling at test level that means he's not being selected; he had a great chance in England to prove himself at the test level on the back of his constantly impressive ODI form but it just wasn't there, but again, this just tells me that they're not benchmarking players, nor setting expectations for what they'd like to see them work on - realistically if we want Henry (or Wagner, or Southee) to be a test match quality 8, they need to be batting six or above in their first class province in my view so they get a decent crack without the tail falling around them.

You can't really hold "fifties" against Young, he's scoring far more frequently at first class cricket than most and giving his wicket away like pretty much anyone that isn't Martin Guptill returning from a severely mediocre test cricket attempt into domestic where he pounds tons for fun. It's again a coaching/administration thing, not working on a repeated issue with him nor trying to understand why he's having issues converting. It's a gameplan thing, he knows how to get starts, but he's either getting mentally tired and making mistakes, or has a gameplan that means once he passes fifty, he adds more shots to his game that are getting him out. Fleming was guilty of the latter and only corrected it post a couple of county seasons

I know it's his bowling, but he puts himself in the conversation more strongly by scoring runs, half centuries which he is capable of. It should be an add-on to his main strength, but he's batting like a chump. I dunno, probably irrational. I just rate the guy so highly with the ball and realistically he's fourth in the seaming queue for the next 3-4 years barring injury or completely loss of form.

Will Young can clearly play. It's a game plan thing absolutely, a mental thing. He'd be in the squad this week if he'd come close to sorting it out. Seen him play List A and he has all the shots, which no doubt is his downfall. Same as Latham. These guys have to be honest with themselves and be smarter than they are exhibiting.

I just think we made that mistake selecting Bracewell through a period of non-performance because we did the young female thing, we liked the idea of what Bracewell was - a seam bowling all rounder who could bring his batting up to test match all rounder status and offer us performances with the ball. We stuck with him while dropping our best performing bowler repeatedly and paid the consequence for it. The Australian series for instance might have been interesting if Wagner had played the entire season. Australia are making the same mistake around Jackson Bird not being selected because they want strength in the tail.

Very few teams win matches because their tail end hits runs.

You reckon? I've heard this mentioned but I don't see it. The Tim Southee comparison seems apt because to me Henry's another guy who looks unnatural on defense, doesn't like the ball at his ribcage and when he hits it looks like a tennis forehand.

I'm not too concerned about him waiting in the wings; if he keeps bowling well in FC and ODIs then the test opportunities will arrive sooner or later.

Yeah, maybe I'm a sycophant. I really rate the guy, ever since I saw him hurry up Tim Mc on List A debut (when Tim was playing Test cricket). I've seen him bat properly and bat well, but now it seems he's going to embrace the go merry, go hard, go home quickly approach that Tim runs with. Shame, should be trying to play the way Doug does. We already have Tim, Neil and Trent who can't be ****ed playing any other way but sheets to the wind.

With Henry and Nuttal playing it is good that Jamieson gets game time in 3rd seamer role, and doing it well.

I would think that's his long term chance for higher honours.

Yeah, I really like the look of him. Just needs a few more km/phs to be someone you think can do well at the highest level.

Dean Brownie retired not out (not hurt) on 3, interesting. That happened today, yes? Signs Taylor is out?

We can only hope. I'd back Brownlie to make a statement in the test and I don't see Taylor performing at the moment.

If Brownlie performs, it would put serious pressure on Nicholls. Which is good, prefer Brownlie over Ronchi.

Loving seeing Jamieson have a great start to the season, some tall timber would be awesome in the BC's. Still very fresh, but who knows in a season or 2. Hope he doesn't have the early 20's back breakdown like everyone else seems to get. Nuttell has flattened off, maybe due to last seasons injuries.

Yeah, Jamieson has been pretty awesome since his breakthrough last season. He would've been a nightmare at Hagley oval last week, but I still can't help but think that he'd be found out on the better surfaces that are more common in test cricket. Still, Oram found a way to be a handy contributor in tests despite being about 130k's flat out so who knows.

Wooo, if he's a genuine 6'8, I'm excited. It did used to irk me that Oram was often labelled as a bonafide 6'8, when he was in fact 6'6.

Hey, don't all you ****s be jumping on the Jamieson hype train, 24 months to late for that.

8 wickets :O

And Munro tonks another tonne. He's our version of Maxwell, ridiculous when on form, and absolutely at sea when not.

Interesting to see Munro blasting Jamieson all around the park while the rest of the batsmen collapsed around him. Hit most of his boundaries off him by the looks of it.
