Ronchi should really have played at #5 here...
We show SO much faith in Guptill, Southee, Boult, Sodhi, Craig and recently Taylor... yet one of the performing batsmen in the last test series with a good first class average and some level of success (although not recently) in other international formats is dropped on a whim.

Just because Ronchi proved to be a decent horses for courses pick for India, doesn't mean it makes any sense to pick him at the start of the NZ home season on wickets likely to favour swing and seam bowling. Not least given he's nearly 36.

Even the last Pakistan-New Zealand series was 2 tests. The fact is that test cricket outside of Big 3 playing each other does not make money. Australia is losing money big time this summer over the 6 test matches.

I'm not a big fan of Nicholls either, but thought he at least showed enough spine and technique against good pace bowling in that 2nd Test against SA to give a crack on home pitches likely to conducive to pace bowling, above a 35 year old with no real future & really doesn't have a better case than anyone else in these conditions.
You're telling me you're going to lose sleep over Ronchi being left out?
