punter got his 257 around his 70th test. went on to play around 100 more. i guess thats not as good but imagine if he never beat his 197 in '99. he must have been not expecting because he named one of his dogs 197 after it.

Even "better" for the first category: Boucher made his top score (125) in his 21st match out of 147; I'm pretty sure that 126 matches is the record for this.

Incidentally, Hutton scored 0 and 1 in his first match, so set his personal "highest score" record either 3 or 4 times.

Great pickup regarding Boucher.

Not sure what is significant about Hutton getting his best 3 or 4 times though?

Nothing really, just correcting the earlier claim that he only had 2 bests (100 and 364).

Having done a more thorough check of everyone who's played 90+ Tests, the biggest gaps between highest scores appear to be:

91: Jacques Kallis (189* in test 52, 201* in test 143)
91: Mark Taylor (219 in test 7, 334* in test 98)
90: Brian Lara (375 in test 16, 400* in test 106)
89: Anil Kumble (88 in test 29, 110* in test 118)
82: Sourav Ganguly (173 in test 17, 239 in test 99)

There may be other players with a gap of 80+. Harbhajan managed the unusual achievement not breaking his highest score for 76 Tests, then breaking it twice in the same Test (previous best 66 in test 12, 69 and 115 in test 88; and then 111* in test 89).

The players who scored their highest innings then played 100+ more Tests have mostly been named already:

126: Mark Boucher (125 in 21st match out of 147)
115: Alec Stewart (190 in 18th match out of 133)
113: VVS Laxman (281 in 21st match out of 134)
106: Graeme Smith (277 in 11th match out of 117)
106: Desmond Haynes (184 in 10th match out of 116)
104: Courtney Walsh (30* in 28th match out of 132)
100: Viv Richards (291 in 21st match out of 121)

No-one's answered my Clarke query - bloke scored 154(?) on debut and took about 5 years to go higher, is there a comparable streak from your very first innings or indeed is there anyone with a reasonably long career who never improved their high score?

James Anderson must've also gone quite a few without improving it - IIRC he had a 34 against South Africa from 2008 that was his best for ages until his 80odd against India last year.

I know Rudolph and Sinclair made their highest scores on debut. Could probably find someone who played more Tests than them though.

Clarke improved his debut score in his 58th Test (166 against Pakistan - and then 168 v NZ in his 59th Test).

Darren Gough never improved on his debut score (65) in his 58 Test career. Southee (in his 43rd Test) hasn't so far.

Anderson's gap was 68 Tests (27 to 95).

In the Machester test 23rd May 2008 Ross Taylor scored his 154*. On December 3rd 2013 he scored his double ton, five and a half years and 45 tests later. Could be a contender for one of the longest gaps.
